How many testing strips are you given with a prescription?

I’ve just picked up my first gestational diabetes prescription(needles and test strips), they’ve given me 200 needles but only 50 testing strips. I have to test four times per day so this gives me 12 days before I run out. I’m just wondering if this is a normal amount? It doesn’t seem like a lot considering I’ll be testing for the rest of my pregnancy.

I got my first prescription last week, I got 200 needles and 50 strips too but I have to test 6 times a day. I'll be having to call and order a prescription every week. Especially considering some days I have to double check readings.

@Kaylee I find it very odd, it just seems like more faff for everyone involved, including the GPs and pharmacists! Even a month’s worth would be so much better!

I got diagnosed at 16 weeks and have the needles and test strips on a repeat prescription when required. The needles come in boxes of 200 so don’t require them as often but i get 200 test strips each prescription and I test 4 times daily. Maybe contact your gp and request a larger quantity

@Kaitlin that’s good to know, I’ll add it to the notes next time I order and see if they’ll give me more! Thank you!

This happens to me sometimes and I guess there can be a limit with what your insurance approves. You might need to give them a call to approve more. I found out my GD counselor was sending RX’s for 200-400 strips but insurance was only allowing 100/month so I had to call them to work it out.

@Kali I’m in the UK so we don’t use insurance but thank you for the advice anyway 😊

I don't need a prescription for the strips so I just get 4-8 packs at a time, can you ask for repeats?
