@Collette I agree to you. Doesn’t seem fair to me as well. I have never claimed any benefits, now with a baby and I only get like 1/3 of my salary as SMP and not eligible for other things like this. It’s not like my bills got less while on maternity. Still tried to apply, but haven’t got the response yet.
@Rudi exactly this your bills stay the same if not get higher with having a baby! Yet if you don’t work at all you get it 🤷🏻♀️ I’ve applied and just had a text to say they’ve made a decision and I’ll receive a letter so think it’ll be a no but why they can’t just say on the text x

@Rudi hey. How did you apply? I can see where we need to print the forms and have a dr give statement child exists and post off is that right? Just seems like everything is online now 😂
@Jasmine print the form, fill it in, I attached the copy of MATB1. That’s what I did, then write the address on the envelope (check on the last page, it gives u instructions). I didn’t post it, just brought in to my nearest job Center plus location and they said they will sort it out from there. Took 7 weeks till they texted me saying they will make a decision in 28 day time, still waiting. But not holding my breath for it.
@Collette yeah, this whole thing is just making me furious. Didn’t get a healthy start card as well due to the same reason, as not claiming anything.
I only got it because I was able to go onto uc whilst on maternity leave as our rent was so high it topped it up. But definitely worth a try no harm in sending it off and seeing if you can.
I received it. I was on maternity allowance too with my first and only baby. I would suggest to print, fill and send the form… and see what happens.
As others said, you need to claim one of the other benefits. Apply for UC...you should be eligible to get it with maternity allowance. Once you have that, reapply for sure start. Once they receive your form you get this message: 'We have got your Sure Start Maternity Grant claim. We will process your claim and contact you within 28 days. If you have made a new Universal Credit claim it may take longer. We will contact you if we need anything. You do not need to contact us.' I got the sure start payment in about 4 weeks.
You need to be on other benefits. I’ve tried as well on just MA and got declined!

I tried that, they said maternity gave me the standard amount so they closed my case. I ended uo having to switch temporarily…worth a go though!

You need to be claiming other benefits. MA doesn’t count which is why it’s not on the list.
