Insulin pump in pregnancy

Has anyone changed from injections to insulin pump whilst pregnant? I have been offered a pump throughout but have found I managed diabetes really well with injections so didn’t feel the need to switch. I’m 19+4 and starting to face some insulin resistance so now considering the pump but wondered what other peoples experiences of this has been? Running slightly higher is stressing me out!

I was told that it is not recommended to change over during pregnancy because there is an adjustment period that can be dangerous for you and baby. I stayed with good old injections throughout my pregnancy and faced the highs, especially in that last 1/3 of pregnancy but I think that’s just part of it 😭 I hated running high too but just keep checking your ketones 💜💜💜

Following; I feel the exact same

@Emma This is exactly what has put me off previously to be honest as well because it will take a while to correct the dosages and get them right, and what if it takes a long time to adjust! I am like running at around 7/8 currently so it’s not dangerously high but having some spikes to like 13/14 which are coming down but it’s so scary! Especially now the insulin is taking longer to act xx

Sounds like you are doing pretty well!! I had some big highs that really scared me and it’s so hard not feeling in control of them. I had my daughter at 38 weeks and she was 9.1lbs. I don’t think I’ll have any more kids but if I change my mind I’ll get on a pump ASAP 😂

I already had a pump but switched to a closed loop system so my highs are auto corrected and it’s helped so much. However if you’re used to having long acting insulin too it can go crazy because pumps only take the one type. I’d bring it up after if not because oh my god is it so much easier

I moved to a pump at 18 weeks even though I was well controlled. I've since had my baby girl but my hba1c went to non diabetic level while being on the pump and although I was very against it beforehand, I am so so glad I changed over now. I was set in my ways but it has made a huge difference. Even now my sugars have been a lot more erratic trying to sort a regime after birth with hormone changes etc, I think I've been over 9.0 three or four times in the past 5 plus weeks. My baby girl was 6lb 1oz when she was born at 37+4 (my induction was moved a week earlier due to going in with reduced movements and as it was only a week before my booked induction they decided to induce then). I've been type 1 diabetic since January 1997 so it was a massive change but 100% worth it in my opinion! Feel free to ask any questions x

Just a tip for anyone really, now I’m in the 3rd trimester I’m doing my insulin up to 45 minutes before a meal instead of the usual 10 minutes

@Bex were you offered the close loop? I have been pushing so hard for it, I’m not on a pump and have asked for one and they just said no. I’m 78% in range and in third trimester also, am finding I have to inject 45-60 minutes prior, but some days it’s only 20…. So annoyed, just feels like they don’t want to help me

@Meryl I already had an omnipod and a Dexcom and just would not shut up about the new version that’s been out in the uk for a whole year now which is closed loop. I just didn’t stop asking Everytime I went to clinic or the midwife rung me and they’re like well you probably won’t get funding but I kept pestering anyways I think they got annoyed 😂😂

Yeah I have a Dexcom and I kept asking about it, they told me I needed to be at 90% in range and my control wasn’t good enough at 78% in range 🙄 then they told me there would be a load of courses I would need to do before they would consider it. It’s sad we have to fight so hard for these things @Bex

@Meryl I got it to improve my range what logic is that 😂😂 tbf at the start of my pregnancy it was only 19% so I think they were willing to try anything. It’s now at 50% so they’re getting something backwards your doctors
