Gestational Diabetes

I need some clarity please.. I have been told I have GD as my fasting blood sugar was 0.1 over. The other two readings of the test were fine. I have since been to 3 appointments about this to check diet and learn how to test blood sugar ect. They are confident that my blood sugar won’t be a problem if I’m diet controlled but the only difference in diet is having more carbs at lunch and less at dinner. Easy fix! I do that now Now they want me to come back every two weeks to an appointment which is $350 and check my blood sugar 5 times a day. I just feel like this is a lot of money and effort over nothing seeing as I have zero symptoms. No swelling no issues with energy or anything. The babies are growing at a healthy rate and weight is normal. I’m also a healthy normal weight and don’t have extreme food or sugar cravings. The risk of going untreated is: increased chance of C section (I’ve elected for that anyway) Having babies that are too big (last scan they were slightly under weight) Increased chance of diabetes later in life…umm okay but checking blood sugar won’t change that Preterm birth (I’m 33 weeks, I’m fine with going into labour right now) My question is.. is it actually bad if I just say fuck it and stop attending these appointments and doing blood checks? I haven’t had high blood sugar in the past 2 weeks at all and the twins are scheduled for c section in 29 days.. It will save me $1000 and time and energy. I honestly actually feel like I just don’t have GD and it’s a mistake

So I think it would be cheaper for you to go get your own blood sugar tested & strips so that you can test when you wake up an hour after every meal. So that in case you do eat something that ends up spiking it you can eliminate it. I was told low carbs always and absolutely no sugar. The only reason I think it’s important is because if you continue to spike without control your baby or yourself can lack the insulin needed which can cause you both severe issues. Also another risk is your baby being born need insulin due to ignoring it. When I had it I really didn’t have symptoms other than a headache if I had too much sugar. My baby was born 38+5 weeks and 7.1 pounds. But I did check my sugars 4 times a day and kept a journal so I could figure out what would spike and what doesn’t.

Thanks @Autumn I do have the kit to test daily but it’s the constant appointments that are adding up. I have 3 more appointments before the twins arrive that is $350 each appointment. Did you feel any symptoms when your sugar spiked? Did it all go away right after birth?

@Emily of course! Yeah that’s why I’m saying I would completely skip the appointments and just test them yourself so you can keep an eye on it! Sometimes the food you ate yesterday can spike today. It’s super strange!! So when it would spike I would either have a headache mild or severe, or I would get light headed because my BP would rise. Other than that I was fine. Yup completely gone as soon as baby came out! I had pizza, Dr Pepper with sugar, Big Mac etc the first 3 days after birth and no symptoms at all! Baby failed his first blood test due to having to feed him formula cuz my milk didn’t come out but passed 3 after that and they cleared him ❤️

Ohhh I understand! Okay great point. Maybe I should just monitor it myself to keep it in check. Ive cancelled my appointment tomorrow and I’ll start a diary to make sure it stays stable Thank you xx

@Emily you got this!! ❤️ I use think the appts were so dumb and unnecessary, but since I’m on a program I had to go and if I missed them I was removed 🤪🤪 but I literally would show up, show my journal with my food and sugar levels be told “they look great keep it up” and sent home haha! Definitely can be self monitoring. And if you have any high readings let your Ob know and bring your diary so they can see if you need any medication. I needed medication at night time to help my fasting levels but that was all ❤️

I’d probably skip it too. I would maybe get my own test strips to just check and make sure. But if yours giving birth in less then a month then I’d do it. That’s a ton of money that even if you did have it pretty bad it wouldn’t fully be worth it. Just try to keep testing because it can get worse the further along you are. But I wouldn’t go to the appointment unless needed. And are these appointments just for GD or also normal pregnancy appointments

@Gabrielle it’s only for GD I also have my normal scans as well as appointments with my Obgyn. So if I keep track myself in a diary I could take that to my Obgyn appointments and she can prescribe or advise on GD. I feel like the requirements to attend the GD specialist clinic is a bit extreme. They call me non stop until I book the next appointment and then call two days before to confirm I’ll attend ect. I’m just going to call and say I’m self managing and working with my Obgyn moving forward and ask them to end my follow up.
