Notified work for pregnancy yet?

Hi all, Has everyone due in Feb notified their work for pregnancy yet? Im 20 next week and haven’t mentioned anything yet because im being considered for a promotion and dont want to impact the outcome. Might have to tell them in 2-3 weeks once the calibration is complete. Any advice?

I’d let my manager and my team know last week just because it was no longer feasible to hide (bump popped out) However I’m not in your position, I’d say if you can, and you think it’s worth it to, then hold off… you only need to tell them 15 weeks before so maternity can be granted and arranged so you’ve still got 5 more weeks really, once you get your MATB1, no harm in holding onto it for a little while but just make sure it doesn’t go past that 25w mark!

It’s illegal for it to impact your promotion as pregnancy is a protected characteristic but can totally see why you’d be on the fence, I would too as we know workplace discrimination does still happen! You’re not legally obliged to tell them until 15 weeks before the baby is due. I wouldn’t say to them that you didn’t want it to impact your promotion as that would inidicate you thought they might discriminate and may demonstrate that you questioned the ethics of the company which also wouldn’t be fair. I would say you wanted to wait for your 20 week scan before you felt more comfortable sharing the news or something like that!

I told my manager at 17 weeks, said I just want to keep it between us until I HAVE to tell. I also told him I’m worried as I’m up for a promotion soon and he said it will absolutely NOT affect the decision

He was very sympathetic about it rather than offended

I told them at 13 weeks because I’m currently on maternity leave so when I’m due back I will be due to have this baby 😅. So I let them know because they’ve struggled getting cover for me so thought it might help. Although they’ve now decided my job is a two person job anyways.

@Sibs how did they take that? At my workplace I have to come back for a month to be able to go on maternity leave again

They were really good and supportive I haven’t got to go back at all. They’re also aware that I may not be able to return after as it won’t be cost effective for me. My maternity leave ends 3rd January so I should have been returning 6th as 4th is a Saturday. They’re going to then put me on holiday as I’m owed a year’s worth of holiday. I will be having baby 29th or 31st January so won’t be returning as I’m having an elected c section at 39 weeks. I then get 33 weeks of maternity leave again to decide whether I will be returning if we can move closer before I will be able to go back part time but I live an hour away and with two kids it’s going to be expensive and hard travelling back and forth.

I let me manager know early cos I had a few appts which I needed to explain - and I was feeling rotten so needed to explain why I was off work a little.

I personally found telling early allowed them to support me more and didn’t feel it would impact anything but totally get the worry about being prejudiced against because of it. You have to inform them by 25 weeks to your due date to qualify for maternity leave and although totally within your right and they can’t do anything some employers may be a bit annoyed for the lesser notice. Basically can’t win! So do whatever is best for you. You could even tell them and make a point about not wanting to affect your chance of promotion because this makes the point that you are very aware. If you have a HR team could help. Anyways they only can officially do everything with the matb1 form but sometimes you get this after 25 weeks but you still need to of informed in writing before then. Would definitely plan to tell them soon. Good luck with your promotion!

I think if you feel comfortable voicing that you have concerns then definitely do it, everyone knows their own company best at the end of the day! Either way it should absolutely not affect the decision! Just reconfirming you only have to tell your employer in the 15th week before due date not 25 weeks before
