NHS diabetes workshop

I’ve just had my first nhs “workshop” where myself and 4 other ladies were shown the monitor and quickly told about what not to eat etc. I found the whole process really rushed and if I hadn’t done my own research would be quite concerned about the lack of info given on food, exercise etc. I found they were more concerned about pairing the monitor and device up than telling us how to control GD. I know they have to warn us but they begin by saying about the risks and that they’ve had a SB case, which really frightened me. I just felt like it was all very badly managed and instead of the reassurance and proper guidance I was longing for I’ve come out feeling worse without really a chance to ask all my questions! How was everyone else’s experience? I’m hoping my midwife will help me more. Do you see a nutritionist at all with NHS?

I felt the exact same way with the ‘education’ session I attended. I gave my hospital trust feedback because I was so shocked at how bad it was. They didn’t even show us how to set up the monitor device and certainly didn’t tell us what we could eat. It was 90% just them telling us all the things that can go wrong with GD, including SB. I left feeling scared to eat anything.

Hi Danielle, I’m thinking of complaining as well. I’m pretty sure the other women in the group felt the same but felt awkward to ask them as we walked out. To top it off, there was a massive birthday cake and snacks in the room for themselves and the staff! You couldn’t make it up! I’ve just managed to do my first reading by re-reading the instruction manual as they rushed it so much I had no idea what I was doing! I’m following the gestational uk Facebook and website seems to have way better info in that the nhs booklet they chucked in the bag! Hoping the rest of the journey isn’t so vague or rushed!

When I did mine they offered a separate session that was with a nutritionist to help with understand the diet and exercise side of things.. Not sure if you've been offered the same, but it's worth it 😊

Thanks Lucy, I’ll ask my midwife if I don’t get offered anything!
