Can I?

I'm a green card holder planning to become a citizen of the US soon. I am married but didn't change my last name yet on my ID. I want to use my married last name when I become a citizen of the US. Is there a strict rule that I have to use the last name on my ID card? Or can I use my married last name regardless if it's on my ID or not?

You can change your last name, you’ll just need to change it on your ID later as well.

You can use whatever you want. I used my application as a proof of name change to get an ID. But why don’t you just change your IDs name it would be easier and it’s quick. Also is there a reason why you want to be a citizen as while it has a few perks it comes with a lot of negative things like having to be a jury, exit tax and so on.

@Boryana I can only afford one at a time. I'll change my name on my ID later on. I've heard about the jury duty and that's why I held out for so long. I don't know about the others. Years later I now have a son and I see life differently I would like to have my mom here with me. She would do well spending time with her grandson. My son's dad side of the family doesn't care nor are they involved so we would do good having my mom as the only extended family here at least. I've also missed her for years so I would appreciate the company. I'm a family oriented person so sadly I don't have that . Christmas and holidays are usually just us 3.

I completely understand you. I moved to the states 5 years ago and I badly miss my family…one year we go to Europe and one year my mom comes here but it’s still hard knowing that she’s missing my daughter growing up. I would love it for her to move here but she loves our country too much (typical European hating American lifestyle) :D Idk if you’re still together with your husband or if he’s just not involved in the situation, but he can file for her to come. I’ve been able to file for naturalization for over a year now and the cons are just way too much…it’s definitely useful if you want to bring a family member here, register a woman owned business for the tax cuts or vote but otherwise it’s not worth it.

@Boryana it's been 14 years for me . My mom doesn't have the chance to come here so it's even worse. It's hard to get Visas in my country so I just wanted to file for her to save her from wasting that money trying to get a Visa. My husband is not a citizen either he came here not long ago. Still have a couple months to go before he can get citizenship status. I don't think my husband can file for my mom last time I checked you can only file for your own family.

@Boryana have they called you yet for jury duty? I heard it's a slim chance you get called. It happened to me once and I let them know I was not a citizen.

I’m sorry 14 years must feel horrible. Yes your husband won’t be able to file unless he’s a citizen (for example mine can as he’s from US). If he becomes a citizen he can file for her as your family is his family too. They did call me and I called them back telling them they can’t legally summon me as I’m not a citizen and they removed me from the list…. Idk who even made that list… what’s next calling tourists? :D Which makes me wonder if I get a citizenship will they add me to the list again now that I’ve been manually removed. Also if you’re the primary caregiver of your kids that’s your excuse not to go as it would result a hardship for your family (sadly lately the list of reasons not to go gets shorter and shorter). If you have a boss they can even write a note stating you’re irreplaceable and they can’t afford to spare you for a few days (that’s what my husband used to do).

@Boryana oh didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I've missed her it's been hard without her my father came here and got in trouble with the law and he wasn't a good dad either he left me with trauma also from his families so it's been me alone until I met my husband and now I have my own little family which I'm grateful for but I would have love to have an extended family to celebrate the holidays with. Same happen to me they sent me a letter I think that time I was in college didn't even started working a decent job yet I was doing work study. I let them know I'm not a citizen. I think they will add you back but hopefully not. Lol yea the system sucks they be adding anyone not even checking if they are a citizen or not if they could add a dog they would 😂 I've heard one lady told me they called her in and she told them she has to care for her sick child and they told her to bring the kids.sounds crazy to me I'm glad your husband able to get out. I think they are doing it the wrong way.

I know people who actually enjoy doing jury duty they should let them volunteer lol

I mean if they want to watch my tornado of a 2yo while I relax on a chair and listen to the drama I would volunteer too :D I bet I’ll get kicked out in 2 seconds.

@Boryana 😂😂 that's right. My son almost 2 and I'm already feeling what they called terrible 2. I could message you if that's ok. You seems Kool.

Absolutely :) Mine started walking at 9m and showed terrible 2 signs at 1yo… since then she’s been a tornado and a half with a ton of energy and her daddy’s stubbornest…her favorite word atm is NO! :D
