Disbelief at positive GD result

Found out today I have GD and I’m completely shocked as I feel like I eat a balanced diet and I go for walks with my toddler regularly. Has anyone else experienced this? I do love my sugary snacks but I’m very mindful of how much I eat 😥

I’m sorry to hear this. Anyone who becomes pregnant is at risk of developing GD. Please don’t be hard on yourself - there are risk factors but there will be no way of knowing with others. Big hugs x

You have done NOTHING wrong. The thing with GD is that it's not remotely caused by your diet and lifestyle. I did so much reading because I spent my entire 1st and 2nd trimester terrified of it but honestly, it's just something that happens in some pregnancies! You're obviously doing really well looking after yourself so keep smashing it and take the pressure off and don't give yourself a hard time!

My best friend developed GD and she’s superrrrrr healthy and eats a great diet! Don’t feel disheartened! Xx

I felt the exact same way when I was diagnosed. The specialist midwife was very supportive and said it is purely hormone based and nothing I’ve done wrong, I’ve been diet controlled since 28 weeks and I’m now 36 weeks. Happy to share any info if you need it. The best place I found advice was actually from https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk x

i got this phonecall today too! don’t fit any of the risk factors, eat pretty healthy although i’m no saint as baby had been craving sugar most of my pregnancy and have an active job. i was shocked, hoping my appointment with the midwife tomorrow will bring so answers. good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I felt the same. For my piece of mind I've asked for the results, as I don't eat sugar or sweets at all and I was told my results were exactly at the boarder/limit. Might have to do with genetics? Anyway it was a low blow for myself also, hate pricking the fingers 3 times per day😒

@Briony thank you so much 🩷

@Bethan thank you, I really appreciate it 😢🩷

@Lauren that’s good to know, thank you 🩷

@Chloe this website has been so useful! Thank you so much 🩷 my usual breakfast of homemade porridge with fruit has caused a spike so any breakfast suggestions would be appreciated 🤗

@lu my midwife and dietitian appointment was very reassuring! I hope it was for you too 🩷

@Raluca me too, especially having to wait an hour after every meal and having a toddler who usually wants to go to the park after meals! Hopefully it will all be over soon for us 🩷

@Eleanor great you have found it useful, I usually have Greek yoghurt and berries for breakfast and sometimes a cooked breakfast at the weekends they both give good readings for me after an hour, I can’t have cereal at all. Hope that helps. If you like to have a carb then pairing with a fat or protein can also really help with lowering readings. I’ve also switched a lot of my carbs to whole grain and swapped potatoes for sweet potatoes it’s been trial and error but has worked well. X
