Is it possible?

My old girl has sun downers, which is doggy dementia. Do you think it would be possible to teach her how to use one of those buttons that she would press and it say “bathroom” when she’s gotta go potty? She has an old lady bladder lol

She hasn’t messed in the house today. I just brought her to our new home Saturday and she has been peeing and trying to pull the trash bag down. I think she is testing boundaries. She’ll sometimes start to whine at me when she has to go. I know she did earlier but idk if it was worth buying the button and trying to teach her.

Oh I feel for you 💛 My dog suffered from dementia in his last few months of life. I finally had to put him down, watching him suffer was too much. As for the buttons, I don't think learning a new skill at this point would work. I put my Chihuahua in a belly band (male diaper). I imagine a female diaper for dogs would work just as well. He didn't seem to mind and it helped tremendously.

my dog started peeing in thr house constantly, he was diagnosed with diabetes that came on over thr course of about 2 months

If you just moved to a new house there’s a chance she’s still getting used to a new environment and is starting a different “cue” to tell you she has to go out? Like sitting in a certain spot of the house or something. Maybe just give her a time and pay extra attention? I wouldn’t say that training a new skill is “impossible” but it will take extra effort due to her age/diagnosis. Teaching her to paw at a bell when going outside is a cheaper option to go with instead of the buttons. Ya just have to stay super consistent with it. Start ringing the bell EVERY TIME you go outside with her.

Pad train her as much as possible with the pads being near the backdoor / what ever door she goes out to potty and it possible to train her on buttons but it may take longer

@Jennifer she was diagnosed about a year ago and honestly I’ve not seen a whole lot of going down hill. At least not as much as I would’ve expected. She’s still seems very alert to stuff, just slowed down from what I’d think is aging since she is 13 and both her breeds (Pitbull and Chow) I believe they live to be 13-15 years old. I told myself if she loses control of bowels, completely quits eating, or becomes aggressive towards us that I’d have to make the call. I’ve been taking her out as much as possible and she goes at least pee every time and poop every other time. She use to bark at the wall for no reason, get herself stuck places but now she seems to be doing better. She’s stopped taking anxiety meds mainly because I couldn’t afford it (now I would but she’s been doing g perfect without it) She had a stroke because of the front desk at the vet told me to give her more of her medicine when she was on it and having an episode which ultimately overdosed my dog.

@Jennifer she had to learn how to walk again, I made her chicken and rice until she was able to eat better but she has seemed to make a remarkable recovery from it, you can still see a slight droop on the side of her face but you’d never know unless I said something.

@Esme my boyfriend doesn’t think she’d be able to learn to use a bell or button :/ if I wasn’t at work all day it’d definitely be something I could do but I know my next few off days are 100% dedicated to my mom due to her having a spine surgery this Monday. Other than obviously coming home to make sure my dog gets to go outside and what not. If we aren’t home for hours (working) she has to be in her kennel :/

@Cass that’s what I was telling him with the messing, getting to the trash can (we have a heavy trash can with a lid and she will tug the over laying bag to pull it down). She’s in a new environment and is testing boundaries. She was also in not a great situation when she was living with my mom still (I had to jump thru hoops for months to be able to have her at my new place) and she has had to be in a kennel unless she was going out to potty because she thinks she’s a lap dog and my mom has a slipped disc in her spine about to have surgery and she couldn’t get her off of her when she wanted to be a lap dog so she’s learning how to be a dog not in a kennel

@Rhiannon i definitely want to get her pad trained so she doesn’t have to sleep in the kennel. I’m gonna look into getting her a doggy couch that’s more her level since her hips are bad and has a hard time getting on and off the couch and my boyfriend doesn’t really want her on the couch incase she ruins it on accident (we don’t have the money for a new one incase you know?)

@Kim I highly recommend the large pads you can fund by the diapers since they are cheaper then the dog ones from what I seen , and if you do want to button train make sure it says outside and every time you take her out push it with her watching & if she does it's high reward treats

@Rhiannon I’ll definitely get the bed pads because they are cheaper, I may try the button but I know I need to get her some spray that will help her not be so stinky (she went to the groomer this past Saturday and is already stinky again) I guess it’s just the way her skin is and then there is a spray that is like a don’t touch spray so like if I spray it on the trash can she isn’t suppose to mess with it?

@Kim dry dog shampoo will help out , and baby wipes unscented to wipe her paws off / face

I didn’t know they made dog dry shampoo 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️ thank you & do you think the pampers sensitive wipes would work for her paws and face?

@Kim definitely

The only downside about training on pee pads is that it does tell her that it’s ok to go to the bathroom in the house… if she’s not at the point that she’s having accidents all the time I would probably avoid the pads for as long as possible. There’s tons of different types of grooming sprays for dogs that will help. She might have extra “yeasty” skin — so adding a skin/coat supplement to her food will also help with her smell. There’s a ton of different kinds in treat form or pill form or liquid/powder.

I’m definitely gonna hold off on pads until I have no choice, she’s not had a mess in the house for three days now. She has been sleeping in the kennel at night tho and when I’m home we go outside every 2-3 hours if that

Sounds like you’re doing the best thing!
