First day of my 3 year old finally been semi co operative with potty training. Where do I go from here? In the first week do you still put nappies on when your out and about and in the car until their fully confident? Any tips welcome!

I ditched nappies all together, because I didn't want to confuse things, I just made sure that before we left the house she went to the toilet, take travel potty and plenty of spare clothes

I ditched nappies too, i heard it’s supposed to be helpful for them to feel when they have had an accident. Good luck ! We had a fair few accidents for a month or two but then it suddenly clicked into place. My daughter still wears nappies overnight though and I can’t see that changing as she drinks so much milk before bed!

@Shannon @Becky how did you know your little one was ready to start potty training? Tried with my little girl in April but she wasn't ready she screamed at potty on day 3 and held her wee in and refused to use it so we stopped. I have bought a toilet seat and stool which she chose but she shows zero interest in it. Just keeps saying no to sitting on it. So I don't know if she is ready or not? Any advice? Also whnlen you stopped using nappies what did you put them in pants?

No, ditch the nappies. Just confuses them and makes it take longer. We still use them for naps/overnight but not any other time. Also really recommend "oh crap potty training" book as it guides you through the process.

My daughter didn’t seem overly into the potty/toilet but she was really up for pink ‘big girl pants’ ! Once she had those on there was no going back to nappies, and lots of accidents! She would sit on the toilet and potty a fair amount but there was also plenty of times she refused even when we knew she needed it. Nursery were really helpful when she was there. And like I said the last couple months it has just fallen into place and I cannot even remember the last time she had an accident. I think there also might be some potty training nappies on sale. maybe it’d be worth taking the pressure off for a few weeks, until she’s happier to sit on it. Have you tried any story books like ‘no more nappies’ ?

I ditched the nappies all day and even for day time naps but put one on for night time just encase. They mostly don’t use the nappy at night, which is a plus but I don’t want to risk it.

Did you just use normal pants or training pants?

@Kate normal pants, I started age 2, so mine has been toilier trained for a long time. I didn't look for any signs, really just good communication and understanding, made it fun, lots if praise, stickers, and encouraging, and once I started, I didn't look back there where times is was hard and plenty of accidents but I just kept at it and kept teaching. A few times, my partner wanted to give in and say, "Shall we just go back to nappies she's not ready" because she went through a stage of weeing herself (regression) but I said no and I'm glad I did

@Becky thank you will give it another try

@Kate I think it just sounds like your LO is being stubborn, keep at it I'm sure you're doing a great job

@Becky yes she certainly is. Going to take her with me to choose some pants to start to wear and go from there.

Once my little one was potty trained I ditched the nappies. Made sure she had a wee before leaving the house, take travel potty and few changes in case of accidents.
