Potty training beginners tips

Alright ladies, I think I am finally ready to start potty training my 2year old. She knows the toilet and liked going into the toilet and seating on it but a lot of the time I catch her after she has already done a poo or she would wait until after I put the diapers back on to do it. Apparently she has done a poo in the toilet once or twice while my husband was with her and she has definitely started to show sign for awhile now. I have a little potty, a toilet seat and a stool. Now where do I start and what do I do? How often to I take her to the toilet and do I complete remove her diaper and clothes ? Please help.

I started my daughter off being naked the bottom half for a few days / week and then seating her down on the potty to try every 15 mins at the start. Then when she got the hang of that I would add some pants, then trousers but allow some time to get the hang of the little changes your doing with adding things into it. We also have a potty sticker chart which helps.

That’s amazing. Did she have accidents around the house ? And what did you do when she left the house like outings and nursery

Yeah sometimes she has accidents around the house but she getting better as the time goes on she’s being doing it for 2 months now. For the outings we started off going out somewhere for 20/30mins with a travel potty just in case. but I would see if she need to go toilet before and when we got back. And at Nursey she used the potty first time with some help from her teacher. X

I also did naked from the waist down! Fortunately I’ve just had the six weeks holidays as I work in educstion so I’ve let him progress at his own rate and then taken him outside when I know he was ready! If you have some time off or a few days together this is usually the best time! Accidents both wee and poo are a given, just have to not get grumpy with them and explain where they should do it next time otherwise it makes them nervous for next time x

@Chelsea thank you this is really helpful

@Beth thankfully I work from home But I am also thinking of booking a couple days off back to back giving me about 4 days (including Weekend) hopefully she picks it up quickly.

I’m glad it’s helpful x

We managed to potty train in a few days but it’s definitely not to say it would work for every child. My little one was already well aware of us having to go toilet etc. When we finally decided it was time we just went for it (I always thought I’d do a lot more research but at the end done very little). We just bought a lot of plain pants and put him in it straight saying there’s no more nappies and he needs to go potty. The first day was literally accidents all the time, probably 10-15 as he was doing little wees, no poo at all. I was thinking at the time he wasn’t ready. I was also asking him a lot (like every 10 mins which sounds excessive) if he needed potty and reminding him to go. I don’t know how, but from the second day something clicked and not only there was almost no accidents, he also somehow managed to hold it for a lot longer. It’s been a few weeks and I rarely remind him now, he just says when he needs to go or takes himself to the potty.

@Daria this is amazing, I am praying my daughter learns really quickly too

@Daria does he wear diapers to bed ?

This won’t change until he’s around 3 or later! Night time is a hard one to get the hang of for the little ones!x

We still put diapers for the nights but most of the nights they’re completely dry so I think in a few weeks we’ll just put pants too and secure the bed with something extra just in case (he’s always had a waterproof mattress protector but will probably put something like a puppy mat underneath too to start with)
