NHS maternity leave advice

Hi ladies, Just wondering if anyone working for the nhs would know. I’ve got 4 weeks of annual leave before my maternity leave officially starts however I was wondering what happens if baby arrives early? For example if she were to come 2 weeks into my annual leave, I know my maternity leave would automatically start but does that mean I lose the other 2 weeks of annual leave? Any advice appreciated!

Your leave should be carried over in that instance , but you would need to check that it is actually done as it would normally fall to line managers to action and they wouldn’t necessarily think about it to add it to your entitlement for the next year.

Don't work for nhs but you can't lose annual leave, you'd have it to use at the end of your maternity leave along with any accrued during your maternity leave

@Hayley would that work even though my maternity would go into the next financial year though? It all feels so confusing!

should be able to carry it over - I would just speak to HR they are the best person to check everything with x

Your leave will definitely carry over, as it is protected legally (I just had this conversation with nhs hr myself!). As someone said above though, make sure your line manager puts the request through for the leave to carry over.

You won't loose your annual leave, it will just tag on to the end if you choose

Depends on the discretion of your manager. I work for the NHS and my manager has previously carried my annual leave over (during maternity leave), double check with your manager x

You would need to check with the trust. Where i currently work my annual leave would get carried on to the end of my mat leave. Where I previously worked I would’ve lost it (it was written in the trust policy that annual leave could not be carried over)

Thanks everyone for your replies, I’ll double check at work :)

I work for the NHS and I was advised that the leave could be carried over, BUT if I booked the leave (say 3 weeks) but baby came early (in the first week of leave), then you lose the annual leave and it doesn’t get carried over. Don’t know why and think it’s extremely harsh as you can’t plan for a specific day for baby to arrive! But it’s in their policy
