Gestational diabetes test because of the bump size ?

Im 33 weeks now and had my midwife appointment today. I was told that my bump was measuring 95th percentile and was recommended having a diabetes test. But both my blood pressure and my urine are fine. No protein is showing in my urine. Has anyone experienced the same? Like being sent to a diabetes test only because the bump is measuring big? I’m kinda reluctant to having the diabetes test. :(

I could be wrong but I don’t think your blood pressure or urine would flag up anything with diabetes. The glucose test for diabetes is fine, and maybe worth getting if they have concerns? But your choice of course! x

You’re best discussing your concerns with your midwife. There will be a reason they want to send you for these test and they’d be the best ones to explain it to you x

I’ve experienced similar! My boy is measuring in 97th centile (based on estimated weight rather than bump size) and they recommended a glucose test, I declined as I’d had 3 already and my most recent was 2 weeks prior, they said that was fine and left it at that 🤷🏻‍♀️ so didn’t seem too concerned about it… also my bump is actually on the smaller side so god knows where this ‘big’ baby is sitting x

I would personally decline the test and request a scan first. The bump measurements are notoriously inaccurate so the test may be completely unnecessary . I’m a midwife and wouldn’t personally request a glucose test without a scan to confirm the growth fist Just as a side note BP and protein in the wee isn’t relevant to diabetes but the urine can flag up glucose but not always particularly in the early stages of gestational diabetes

I was in your boat a few days ago. My blood pressure has been on the lower side but that's because I wasn't drinking enough and no protein in the urine. I had no signs what so ever apart from a big baby (90th percentile) but again I was 9.9lb and my partner was 10.5lb so we were expecting a large Bubs. Done the glucose test and came back with a positive ☹️ was in complete disbelief but I'm glad I know, baby is going to be so much safer and healthier compared to if I didn't know. Spoke to a dietician this morning and it's not as extreme as I thought and actually feeling quite positive about the whole thing even though I did spend the day I found out in tears.

Protein is more sign of pre-eclampsia, they would have been looking out for sugar in your urine. I had my scan today and they said my baby has had a huge growth spurt since my last scan at 33 weeks now in 90th percentile and had me go to the day clinic to have a blood test to see if I’ve suddenly developed GD.

I had this with my first baby. I passed the glucose test but the baby was measuring big so they wanted me to take blood tests for a week and it turned out I did not have diabetes but just a big baby. The baby size measurements were very accurate in my case though.

I wish they did my diabetes test earlier, I would have learnt what to eat earlier

I’m measuring on the 97th percentile and my baby was 4lb5oz at 30 week scan.. I had asked my midwife about GD test and they won’t do it as he has been consistently measuring big. So maybe if you have had a sudden increase in weight they want to test you for it? I guess no harm in finding out if you’re ok with it, but is your body and your baby so your choice in the end!

Girls thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. I ended up going for the test and it came back negative ♥️
