Recent diagnosis

Hi everyone. I've just got my results back from my gtt and been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Both my one hour and two hour results were perfect but my fasting was 5.7. I don't have an appointment until next Friday when I'm 30+6 with the diabetes team so unsure what do I do now? They didn't explain anything on the phone, so feeling a bit worried. I still have major food aversions so I'm dreading limiting food even more and I'm petrified of blood - the thought and sight of it makes me quite nauseous and often physically sick. So I don't think going to cope with finger pricking, especially if it's multiple times a day. Does GD mean I have to have baby early? Have my birth options changed? I wanted a water birth but am I considered high risk now?

Heya, sorry you got that result :( me too it sucks. The midwives sent me this site which helped me figure things out a bit better. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/gestational-diabetes

I think everyone reacts differently to different foods so you need the test kit before you can really figure out what's working for you. The finger pricking does suck but you get used to it pretty quickly. I think just try not to think about it. The more i dwell the harder it is!

It’s so shit I won’t lie, have you tried having a protein snack before bed. There’s no reason you can’t have the birth that you want they have to follow policy it’s not the law x

I'm no medical professional so take my advice with a pinch of salt but I haven't been allowed to go too far over. I've asked to go as long as possible before intervention, I'll be 40+4 when the intervention is booked. Hopefully that helps you set your expectations. I too have asked about water birth I was told I can discuss it with the consultant so don't think it's out of the question or anything

Don't stress, it will all be fine

I’ve found the gestation diabetes subreddit really helpful for meal and snack idea. Hang in there 💙

Try not to stress about it (easier said than done I know!) I had it and you'll probably be asked to go on a course so you're aware of risks and given advice on diet. There's actually loads of research and resources online. The main thing i would say is focus on the positives as stress can affect blood sugar to you'll just need to limit your Carb portions and sugar intake and portion sizes and Inc veg/protein intake. You can have a treat but try have it during the daytime or early evening and then go for a walk to burn the sugar off. It's completely manageable. And as long as your staying within the recommended levels your baby will be fine. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to have baby early- unless yoir sugar levels rise and are uncontrolled or baby grows above average. Feel free to msg me. I know its not easy esp if you don't like blood but if you have a partner or someone else to help you that can make it easier. You got this mama 💜

I felt this way at first, too. Hang in there. Make the appointments to talk to your healthcare team and they will guide you through. It’s not fun at all and for me it was really overwhelming at first to get the hang of things. I still have days where I’m frustrated I have to be so concentrated on my food intake and what/when… but I know it’s best for me and baby. I try to focus on what I can do- take walks, meet cravings with healthy options, etc. and that helps my mindset. I was diagnosed at 14 weeks and am 30 now. It gets easier. Hang in. 💖

It’s tough at first! Especially seeing everyone else enjoy all the carbs and sweets 🙂‍↕️ at first it’s overwhelming- timing your food and making sure you keep the log / kit with you but you get used to it! Trust me. Everyone reacts to foods differently so there’s that too. Just make sure you enjoy the remaining of your pregnancy as much as you can 🩵 the doctors will try and push you towards inductions but remember you have a say and choice. The furthest they’ll let you go is 41 weeks I believe and beyond that it’s risky for them

Just want to say that perhaps CGM/continuous glucose monitoring can be an option so you don't need to see as much blood. I am struggling with finger pricking too, and considering doing a combination or pricking and CGM - trying to see if I cope better with CGM. On food, I got assigned to a nutritionist and she's helpful in helping me identifying food options I can tolerate. I hope this will be the case for you too. Exercise does wonders too in getting your sugar level down. They may want to induce you early if you have GD but I think (maybe others can correct me if this is wrong) it'll depend on your glucose level and how big your baby is through your pregnancy. I'm hoping I can avoid induction if possible still.. Above comments seem really positive and I'm so grateful for this supportive community! But in my case, finger pricking only got slightly better.... that's why I'm thinking of giving CGM a try. I hope your case will be smoother - rooting for you from afar!
