Who to contact

I’m 22 weeks pregnant and I’m unsure of who to contact with pregnancy related health problems. For example, my back pain is quite bad and I’ve been having watery discharge. The only midwife number I’ve been given is maternity triage and obviously these aren’t emergencies. Do I go through my doctor and request to see a midwife or do I request to see a doctor? So confused!

I would book in with your midwife and tell them you’re concerned x

Have you not been assigned a midwife? Who did you have your 16W appointment with/who is your 25W appointment with? That's who I'd ring :) for issues like this I tend to ring my midwife

You absolutely can call maternity triage for any issues. Never think you can't. However, anything like this should be dealt with by your assigned midwife. You should have seen them at 20 weeks.

It’s just a community midwife at my doctors I saw at 16 weeks and then I’ll see a different one at 25 weeks, you don’t have a 20 week appointment where I am, just the scan. I haven’t been assigned a midwife x

@Kirsty I don’t think you can in my area, it says to ring them if you think you’re in early labour, bleeding, reduced movements etc x

I still stand by my answer. They are there to help you, regardless of what stage of pregnancy you are in or what problem you have. What are you going to lose by calling them? If they can't help you, they will direct you to the best person who can. You shouldn't feel you don't know who to turn to if you feel something isn't right.

@Kirsty thank you 🤍

Ah okay so your midwife is GP based? In that case you ring your GP, tell them what has happened, and ask to either speak to the midwife and get an appointment asap or to get an appointment with a doctor, whichever they advise will be quickest

@Alexandra thank you so much!! Xx
