Phobia

I’m quite embarrassed about having a needle phobia and have bad anxiety every time I have an appointment come up and it’s ruining my experience of pregnancy does anyone else suffer and know anything that can help?

I used to hate the idea of needles/getting bloods done before my first and by the end of my pregnancy I was injecting myself! Be adamant you have to lie down and just shut your eyes or look away when they have to give you vaccines or take bloods done. It’s more common than you think!

@Nicole Thankyou you can’t help but feel like it’s just you going through all this even though people around it’s still lonely x

I have the same fear and had my first ever blood test during this pregnancy. My doctor prescribed me with numbing cream for the blood test which helped massively. I also let the nurses know I have a phobia and they make sure I’m laying down when I have my bloods done. I also turn my head and look at my phone to distract me. I hope this helps!

Same here! Completely needle phobic! What I’ve found that helped was to be able to lie down and have something (like a hoodie) over my face haha

@Amie 100%! My midwife would ask me how I would be in labour if I couldn’t watch a needle but honestly it’s a totally different experience and you run on adrenaline! Just take each day as it comes and you’ll do great ❤️x

@Tara that’s what I have done got some numbing cream and as sad as it is I always have my mum with me x

@Sophie yeah I have to bury my head aswell x

@Nicole I will can’t thank everyone enough on here it was very out of my comfort zone downloading this app but it really helps xx

@Amie always here if you need to message 🫶🏻xx

Yes same here, had surgery in 2012 and it was hell, first pregnancy I fainted a couple times and this pregnancy struggle too.. I have to just close my eyes, bite clothing while they do it and make noises.. sounds weird but the only way I can kind of cope barely lol

I can really relate to this! Huge phobia of needles! Not sure I can advice much as I’m also really struggling! Had a panic attack during my 12 week scan, and couldn’t breath ☹️ also trying to find coping mechanisms! My sister is a nurse and I spoke with her about it and she’s recommended Emla cream, which is a numbing cream, so I’m going to try that for the whooping cough and next blood test! You can get it over the counter at a pharmacy! Sorry I’m not much help! But you aren’t alone! 🩷

I had a moment last time I gave bloods too, I don’t like it. I’ve said no to student nurses and find it’s better if I lie down and ask the nurse to chat with me to distract me. I tell them I’m nervous before hand as well in the hopes they’ll get someone who is very good to do it 😂
