First time pregnant-booking in appt

Hi all, I found out I am pregnant last week (around 4 weeks now). I called the GP to book my first appointment (unsure what to ask for). The receptionist was also unsure and booked me a midwife appointment, hoping it’s a booking in appointment. Does anyone know if the midwife will ring ahead of the appt to confirm. Do I need to take anything to the appointment? Any advice would be great, completely lost on the next steps. Thank you x

Not sure where you are located, but for my local hospital I call them directly and they arrange a midwife appointment at the hospital. I do understand some areas you call GP and go there for an appointment. It’s usually to go through yours and your partners family history, any previous pregnancies, and health issues with yourself or your partner. Basic checks weight, height, do you smoke, drink, blood pressure sometimes urine and blood test. It’s normally quite relaxed and they will talk you through the process and other upcoming appointments and scans you’ll have. You don’t need to take anything with you 🥰. You’ll do amazing! And congratulations xx

If you gP uses texting they should text you confirmation of appointment. Where I live I have to fill out an online form to refer to midwife but is different everywhere. When you go, you just need to know health stuff about you and baby’s dad and then make sure you can urinate as they will take urine sample and blood sample. They take height weight, co2 reading, BP, HR. They will discuss stuff like what safe to eat, what to expect scan wise and appointment wise as can differ depending on if you are consultant led or not. They will ask what hospital you want to give birth in and just general stuff about yourself. It’s normally around 90 mins x

Thank you both 🤍 this is so helpful. This early stage of the pregnancy is scary and long, especially when you don’t know what you need to know/ expect x

Feel free to message if you need any more help! It’s what we’re all here for 🥰

I just did an online referral as that what my GP sed to do and they rang me a few days later and sed i would get a booking in appointment around 8 to 10 week I'm gathering because it my first pregnancy they will call me at 6 weeks booking the appointment for the 8 week mark and then maybe my scan at 12 weeks I don't know it my first time and I'm 5 weeks and 1 day even still dosent feel real had to do some strip tests they were alot darker than when I first tested

Each trust does it a bit different. I had to do a self referral via their website. I then had a call within a week to go through some bits and they booked me in my first appointment over the phone.I then had another call the week after that. Then the week after my first appointment I had another call I can't remember what that one was for as I'd already gone over family history because it was about 2 weeks after my first appointment they told me my blood test results where okay. My trust still does everything via paper, some other trusts have an app where you can see bits. My paper notes are now in my records (until they digitalise them, which I know they're slowly doing as I work for the trust I gave birth in)

It's different everywhere. Where i am you self refer via a form on the hospital website. Then you get a code for their app and fill in some preliminary paperwork on there before your booking appointment at around 8-10 weeks. You don't need to take anything, they'll just do some blood and other routine tests and talk to you about a few things.
