Advice needed! Do we go with our fav name even though I hate how it's pronounced locally?

So we've had our favourite name picked out since forever, a family name that we love, but my husband and I are from the UK now living in Tennessee, and the way it is pronounced in an American accent really bugs me! Its not something that could be easily corrected, as its root is a common American name - think similar to how Harry is pronounced US vs UK. Do we stick with what we love and suck it up, or try and find something else?!

@Amy I'm not sure how we could change it - again, similar sound to UK h-AH-rry vs US h-AI-rry - but yeah worried how she'll pronounce it herself as she grows up!

If you don't like the way it's pronounced with an American accent, and likely a southern one being in Tennessee, I'd pick a different name. I have an Ecuadorian coworker who can't pronounce my other coworker's son's name which is Judson. It sounds like Johnson every time he says it so he'll either call him JC or Judd which are two nicknames the parents have already chosen.

As someone who lives in Tennessee from the west coast.....don't let how the southerners pronounce things ruin the name. 🤣 Southern twang can ruin the most simple words.....ask someone from the south to say oil or Louisville it'll drive you crazy. Just do you boo. Give the baby the name you want. As someone with a European name I've spent many days correcting people on saying it the right way and came out just fine..well when it came to people screwing my name up at least 🤣

So, my son is Kabir. Kabir is a Persian name and in Hindi is pronounced with a palatal R sound. We have a friend who doesn’t seem to be able to pronounce it at all and calls him Kabee, thinking she’s pronouncing it right. But the kicker is that my son has an American accent and doesn’t speak Hindi yet, so he pronounces his own name Ka-beer. So you can try, but you may find that your own child pronounces it the way the teacher and friends do.

Stick to your name. People might say it differently in different regions, but that’s just the way it is

I’m American, living in the UK the last 10 years. In the UK my name is pronounced TAN-ya (like going tanning) and I hate it, and hate correcting people bc they wouldn’t naturally pronounce it properly. My advice is to find a name that is pronounced how you want it to be according to where you intend to raise your child, as this is likely also how they will learn to say it, and possibly prefer later in life themselves!
