GTT

Have my GTT tomorrow and the nhs website states two blood draws, a fasting sample then 2 hours after drinking the drink. I have just read that my trust does 3 blood draws?? One an hour after the drink and another 2 hours after. I'm a fainter and have extremely bad veins so any blood draw is traumatic for me, normally takes 5/6 attempts and sometimes have to use the veins in my feet.... is it a necessity they take 3 draws??? Surely if the nhs website says 2 then 2 will be enough instead of putting me through an extra?

I had this the other day, the hospital didn’t have the drink in for me and they just took one blood sample and said they could do it from that x

so for me, it was one blood test. drunk the drink, wait two hours and then another blood test. usually the people doing the blood tests are phlebotmoists so they spend all day taking blood from people. they will have a lot of experience with people who are difficult to get blood from x

I’ve got mine on Wednesday and I’ve only ever heard of it being two blood draws. I’d definitely ask before they get started and if they say it has to be 3, I’d be asking them for their rationale on that and explaining your worries about it. Fingers crossed they can just do two 🤞🏻🤞🏻

@Summer-Rose that's what I was expecting to happen but after going over the leaflet I was given I've read there's an extra draw an hour after the drink. Unfortunately I've met the lady who is doing my bloods tomorrow as she done the bloods for my 28 week scan- she had a go 7 times before she got any success and even then she couldn't get a good vein and had to call the doctor x

@Jules as far as I was aware it was 2, I've heard that some people have to go back for longer tests with certain results. Reading through the leaflet tonight and seen the additional blood draw and I've mentally prepared for 2 but I know they will struggle to get blood out of me 3 consecutive times. My veins tend to collapse a bit and go very deep after a singing draw so two would be tricky enough. Not showing any symptoms or signs of GD, and would much rather do finger pricking at home but I wasn't allowed.

I had this last week and am the same as you with bad veins. I went to the hospital and said straight away that I need a phlebotomist (as everyone else sees it as a challenge and actually aren’t phlebotomist- they’re usually health nurses or midwives). I went down to phlebotomy, had my first test, drank the drink and then they sent me back down to phlebotomy for my second.

I had mine last week. They did the finger prick first, then they took 2 blood samples. Had the drink and 2 hours later had the 3rd done but had to go to phlebotomy for the last one as the nurse struggled to get blood out for the final one. As I'm not much of a bleeder myself. The worse part is waiting around I found

Are you having it done at the hospital? You could ask if they could put a cannula in instead? Then it's only 1 IV. They may not be allowed though because of the necessity to get a "clean" blood sample (there will be some leftover blood in the cannula between samples but they can always draw back and discard before taking the sample).

I’ve had this test 3 times and only ever had 2 blood draws. Maybe they’re referring to the finger prick test as the third?

Had my GTT this morning and they did take 3 draws, almost took 40 mins to get blood out of me each time 🤷🏻‍♀️ ended up being there for 4.5 hours instead of 2... refused to get a doctor or phlebotomist. Refused to use a cannula. They wouldn't even let me have a sip of water after the draws. Suggested if I could do finger pricking at home instead and it was a big no. Fab experience 🫠😁

@Kaylee oh no, I’m sorry it wasn’t a positive experience! It’s such a shame they can’t be a bit more accommodating, especially when it’s quite traumatic to have so many attempts at needles being poked into you 😬😬

I guess this has happened by now but my friend has to request they use smaller needles as if they use the normal ones they just blow her veins. You could try that going forward. She even has infant canulas placed as normal sized one just blow her veins as well.

@Kaylee oh god! I’m so sorry you had a horrible time 🩷
