Amniocentesis….

We have been offered an amniocentesis at 18 weeks but I’m really scared to go for it due to the risks involved…. Anyone had it done? It’s to rule out genetic abnormalities but they are not sure what one yet 😫

I had this done at 36weeks.. it’s painful but you have a clear picture of any chromosome issues baby could have. My little boy didn’t have any problems after me having it however I was further along in my pregnancy xx

Why were you offered this? Have you done NIPT already and found anything abnormal? We also considered amniocentesis but couldn’t take the risk of miscarriage so went for NIPT instead.

I had cvs at 13 weeks and i can honestly say it was such a horrible experience and i wish i could have had the amniocentesis instead. Heard from a few family members and friends that the amniocentesis isn’t a comfy feeling but it doesn’t hurt and is over and done very quick. You may feel a little pressure in your belly as the fluid is collected.

@Wanyu so yeah we had the NIPT testing done which came back low risk but scans are showing markers for other possible genetic abnormalities so suggested a amnio to rule that out and look at structural issues

A good question to ask yourself is, what would you do if the results came back positive vs negative. Some people who know they are going to choose to carry to term regardless of the results choose not to do the test because it doesn't really matter. They can get testing done after birth if needed. However, other people decide that they want to know because they want to be able to be as prepared as possible if there is an issue. They can do research about it ahead of time, contact the right specialists, etc.

As for the risks you should just ask your doctor. I'm sure they can share the risks with you. My understanding is that there is a risk of miscarriage but that's it's low and that's why they wait until 16-18 weeks because the risk is lower.
