Taking extra SMP payment?

Hi ladies I handed my notice in to work today (yay) and I am potentially starting with my new job in thr middle of September. My old employers treat me like rubbish so I can’t wait to to go a new role! Is it bad to take the SMP payment AND then whatever small salary I get for starting in the middle of the month? I don’t know my start date yet so I haven’t told my new employer but I don’t want to get in trouble for taking both!

Absolutely not, SMP is from the government and you are entitled to it no matter what employment you’re in. So please take the funds!

@Lucy I thought it stops once you’re employed so I was worried I would be forced to pay back smp!

SMP is government pay, but done via your employers payroll. So any overlaps etc, your old and new employer would’ve informed payroll and HMRC of any changes in employment so should all be ok. They do the admin for you, so you’ll be ok x
