Early induction

During my most recent ob/gyn appointment my doctor did an ultrasound like usual. The appointment before this last one he had noticed some calcifications on my placenta. He told me he wants me to start doing weekly non-stress tests at the local hospital because I'm only 33 weeks along. He said he might induce me early depending on the results to avoid a still birth. He also said he wants a growth ultrasound done to check if the baby is getting what he needs from the placenta. I'm extremely freaked out at this point. Has anyone else dealt with this type of thing before? How did you cope with the fear and anxiety?

My twins were born at 32 weeks bc the perinatologist saw that one of my girls wasn’t growing. Just from one ultrasound. I’m glad they’re checking on you and trying to see how your baby develops weekly, bc when my girls were born they told me that the weight difference was just 100 grams, which it’s nothinggg and they were fine it was just a mistake from the ultrasound… My girls were fine, they shouldn’t been born at that time. But besides that the Nicu stay was really stressful for me bc it was during Covid. I went with my partner to see them everyday. it depends on the state you live in or the hospital how soon you can take your baby home. Here in Florida is 36 weeks and they need to be gaining weight.

@Sofía I just really don't want to lose my baby. I've got a history of unsuccessful pregnancies so it really worries me

@Jordan yeah I get it that’s why it’s good that they’re checking on you weekly to see what’s really going on

I'm dealing with this. Do you know what percentile your placenta is functioning at? At 31 weeks, my fundal height was measuring 6 weeks behind. I had a growth ultrasound at 32 weeks and baby was diagnosed with severe IUGR along with the placental dysfunction. I have one more growth ultrasound on Tuesday to see how much she's grown, but I am being induced at 37 weeks (a little less than 2 weeks from now). Twice weekly NSTs, weekly dopplers, and weekly prenatal appointments with my OB until then. Feel free to message me if you need to talk to someone in a similar situation!

@Jordan my OB let me know that still birth is more likely when your placenta starts calcifying too early. That's why they monitor everything and induce you early. There are different grades to placental dysfunction and the dopplers have been helpful to see the bloodflow between the placenta and my baby. It's gotten a bit more abnormal, but not to the point where we need to change our current monitoring plan.

@Lianna my doctor never told me what percentage is functioning at. He said I needed weekly non stress tests and a growth ultrasound but only gave me an order for the NSTs.

@Jordan I would ask about the growth ultrasound again because that will help show if the placenta is effecting your baby's growth. They can also look at the bloodflow during that. My ultrasounds and NSTs are all done with maternal fetal medicine (mfm) because they are specialists with high risk pregnancies. Depending on your hospital, MFM may be able to reach out to your doctor about the orders.

@Lianna the closest hospital with MFM is 2 hours away from where I live. I unfortunately don't have the gas money to be traveling back and forth like that every week.

But I definitely will talk to my doctor about the growth ultrasound again
