What to expect from Obstetrics appointment

Hi all So I have an appointment this afternoon with the Obstetric Consultant but I have no idea what this is for or why so now I'm anxious because I don't know what to expect to be talking about At my booking in appointment I was told I was low risk and wouldn't likely need any consultant care and my midwife didn't seem to know at my 24 weeks appointment either At the start of pregnancy I was on Citalopram so I wondered maybe whether it's about mental health? The midwife also said it could be my Joint Hypermobility Syndrome but I was under the impression that because I'm not under any other consultants for this at the moment that it was unlikely to even be considered I know nobody can tell me what it's going to be for but I guess just hoping someone can advise what these appointments are like/what happens in them?

Show your support

It’s usually from something discussed during your booking appointment. It’s just an appointment with a doctor/consultant rather than a midwife. They will probably just discuss your medical issue and maybe a plan for the rest of your pregnancy/birth. Hopefully you get a cheeky scan also 🥰

I had one without much context either - I went along (feeling rather nervy!) and it was simply because I had come off of some anxiety medication last year. Mine was with Royal Berks NHS Trust and was just a blood pressure check, general chat about how I'm feeling, and reassurance. The consultant was LOVELY and we agreed I didn't need any further support at this time and that was that! X

Oh ok that's good to know thankyou ☺️ just so many appointments and barely any communication about them , hopefully it'll feel positive and be nice just to have the space to chat!

As others have said it's just an appointment with a doctor rather than your midwife. I'm actually under two different obstetricians (twin specialist and a health condition specialist). Both are lovely and so far our appointments have been focused on planning the actual birth e.g. I am having a c-section, so the obstetrician took me through the process and options for this and booked in a date. They also discuss any questions or results (e.g. blood test showed I'm anemic which is common with twins). I understand being given another doctor unexpectedly can make you worry but honestly I find the appointments very helpful and appreciate the more frequent care. Hope that helps

@Jess Yh thst happened In mine Csuse they heard heartbeat but couldn’t hear cause it was a smaller Doppler machine so they gave me a scan too to reassure me😇😂💕

Mine is because I take levothyroxine but also because I had an emergency section with my first.

Thanks all, it was super reassuring to hear your experiences ☺️ It was a really nice appointment, I walked away feeling so supported which I hadn't really had so far! Turns out it was because of mental health, joint Hypermobility and also IBS so basically just oversight given the additional health stuff! Also got to hear his heartbeat and a very quick glimpse on the ultrasound which was a great surprise 😊
