UK - Gestational diabetes advice

Hi, I had my daughter back in June 2022 and she was a big baby (9lbs 6oz) but they never bought up gestational diabetes and I was low risk the whole time. I’m pregnant again with my 2nd baby, and they have said because my last child was a big baby, they want to test me for gestational diabetes at 28 weeks. I’m fine with being tested, but now I’m starting to worry what this could mean if I’m positive?! As an Insight - I am quite petite and my BMI is bang smack in the middle of normal. I won’t lie, I do indulge in takeaways, snacks, chocolate, etc. but this has never been a problem before. If I have gestational diabetes - can you literally have nothing with added sugar?! How strict do you have to be if you have it?

You don’t have to cut out all sugar - when I had GD I definitely still had little treats but it was more about finding what worked for my blood sugars and making sure there was good balance between carbs, protein and good fats. I didn’t actually count sugars at all I always focused on the carb value. Obviously you do end up changing your diet quite a bit but you can definitely work it so that you still have those little treats here and there.

Have you considered declining the test? Maybe you just grow bigger babies? Did you give birth vaginally with no issues last time?

I'd read the gestational diabetes UK website lovely the best information is on there and the fb group. You do need to be strict and be very mindful but it depends what your diet was like before to how intense the change feels. Your tolerances will dictate what you can tolerate. Upping protein and fat and never eating just a carb is a big thing xx

@Lottie yes I have definitely considered it! I believe big babies just run in my family, I was a big baby myself, my sister has had 2 big babies and I’ve had 1 big baby. I gave birth vaginally, but did have to be assisted with a ventouse delivery, because they weren’t happy with my daughter’s heart rate whilst I was pushing x

@Morgan thank you for your comments! I was starting to worry I would have to completely cut everything out and was panicking what I would actually eat 😅x

I got diagnosed with GD a week before Christmas in my first pregnancy so I definitely know the feeling 😅 Just remember a big baby doesn’t always mean GD either so fingers crossed that’s not the case and you don’t have to worry about it at all!

So glad to hear you’ve considered it! Sounds very like it’s common in the family. Were you induced? This time an assisted birth is very unlikely being second time round! Have you considered a homebirth? I highly recommend them! I had one for my first birth 6 months ago and loved it!

GD isn't caused by anything you've done so I wouldn't worry that anythings been a problem!. They are likely just being cautious as it's a risk to mum and baby so it's best to check it and if it's there they can help and if it's not then positive!

I had a 9lb 12oz baby and they said that I was just under the limit for having to be tested. I asked why it hadn’t been brought up in my last pregnancy, like you I’m not overweight and have a healthy BMI, but my midwife said it could be that I just have big babies (I was 7lbs mind!)

I am very much pro choice for all situations however as someone who has had GD, I would really encourage you not to decline the test. I appreciate what @Lottie is saying but it’s a very small time out of your day and if not done and you have GD could cause huge health implications for baby, some too terrible to even discuss. A GD diet is very manageable and I’m someone who lived on carbs and sweet treats 😅 there are lots of way to eat right but not be miserable with food. For me I was diagnosed late so only had to do it from about 30 weeks onwards and as soon as baby was born I massively indulged and chocolate never tasted so good.

I was the same. My daughter was 9lbs 7.. but tested negative for diabetes..they were so convinced I had it and the test was wrong that I had to do it twice and both came out negative. My second baby was also measuring nearly 10lbs and I was tested again and negative x
