Paternity leave UK

How many weeks off are you entitle to have as a father? I’ve been reading that fathers are entitled to have 1 or 2 weeks of paternity leave, but I also read of fathers taking a month or more off. How does this work?

It depends on your work. My partner gets 8 then goes back for 6 weeks then can take another 8. By gov it's 2 weeks though x

It sounds like it’s with the shared maternity leave so your partners would reduce if you have more.

8 weeks? So the 8 weeks are adding up to the 2 of the government ?

The 8 and 8 is his works scheme

If you go on the gov website that states 2 weeks. Get your partner to look into his works paternity scheme, he can email HR

Hey I’m from the US. Do you all get paid maternity leave in the UK?

@Brittany 🇭🇹🫶🏼 yes by law we get 39 weeks paid maternity leave but can take 52 weeks off (the other 13 weeks unpaid). Some employers will pay for the entire 52 weeks but this isn’t the norm. Fathers get 2 weeks paid paternity leave but mothers can share their entitlement if they want.

A lot of companies will have their own policies but many will just be the statutory two weeks. They can save up their annual leave to have more time off if the company will allow it

@Brittany 🇭🇹🫶🏼 we do get paid as someone else said so we are very lucky, however the government statutory amount of pay is very low so for the majority of people unless their company pays more it is still really financially difficult! For me when I go on maternity, I will get less than half of my usual pay

I think it depends on the company they work for aswell my partner has recently been told he gets 16 weeks full paid off

@Amy-May very lucky! I live in the US and we don’t get anything 😂 Companies can choose to pay their employees leave with pay but there aren’t any federal laws or funding for maternity leave. I think the only states who do actually participate in this is California New York and New Jersey
