stocking filler christmas

what is the actual point of a stocking filler? like i’ve always done it and never understood it? it’s my daughters 4th christmas this year and everyyear i’ve done presents for me then i’m a sack presents from santa and then stocking fillers ?

Origins are from Saint Nicholas who apparently dropped gold down a guys chimney when he didn’t have the funds to pay the dowery for his daughter to marry. I put a banana and colouring book in my LOs stocking last year (she was 20m old) - she loved it. 😅 My families always made the stocking boring essentials like pants, socks, tooth paste and something stupid, along with snacks. 🤷‍♀️

I do stockings from Santa because in most movies/ books/ songs he is filling stockings
