HMRC CHILD BENEFITS

Hi there, I make over 50k a year and currently on Mat leave from Jan - Dec receiving £102 child benefit a month. When you receive over 50k you have to return some of the child benefit at the end of the (tax?) year. My organisation offered me 90% pay for the first 6 weeks then dropped to stat pay for the remainder. Do I still have to pay back the child benefit even though my take home per month has been less than a grand and if so how much ?

They upped the limit to 60k

Is the limit including partners salary as well? Or just the mothers?

as @Yasmin said, the limit was increased to 60k and it includes the partner’s salary too, so whoever is the highest earner in the household. I believe it’s based on what you actually got paid that year, so if it’s 90% + smp then you should not have to repay anything. https://community.hmrc.gov.uk/customerforums/pt/6b168c1f-d2fa-ed11-a81c-6045bd0e3464#:~:text=For%202023%2F24%20for%20every,1%25%20of%20the%20child%20benefit.

@Nosh it’s not a combined salary, it’s only if one of the parents earns over that amount.

@Yasmin oh I did not know this, thank you ! X

@Nosh I think this depends on a few factors like living situation etc .. not too sure

@Kasia I hope it’s the case that I don’t have to repay because SMP is pennies and the boost from child benefits has been good. Thanks for sending this over xx
