Gestational Diabetes

Has anyone been through a pregnancy where they were diagnosed with gestational diabetes, but they didn't check blood sugars, ate healthy as possible still but just didn't check for any reason, could be financial or other reasons. How did it go? Is your baby healthy? I was diagnosed and I am eating healthy, not checking blood sugars now but will later on after 30 weeks. Just going with my intuition and gut a bit with this one. Let me know! I feel like OBs and midwives are so pushy about this subject sometimes!

So I did check my blood sugars, but it wouldn't have made much difference if I hadn't (as the result was mostly always what I was aiming for, it was only high a few times). I didn't need medication, just watched what I ate. My son was born healthy, came naturally 8 days early weighing 6lb 7oz. A quick and easy 4 hour labour. No complications. I couldn't have asked for it to go better really!

I did check but I ate healthy so was always fine. They mainly told me to cut down carbs cos i didnt have much sugar in my diet anyway. Just had to monitor thru diet. My boy was showing as being really small so I ended up telling them I'm sacking off their advice cos I'm sure he stop growing due to me having to eat overly healthy. I'm sure he needed the carbs! By then it didn't make any difference as I was already 35 weeks and they convinced (scared) me into being induced saying he might not make it if I go beyond 37 weeks. He came out as 5.4lbs but was perfectly fine. He's nearly 3 now and has always seem to need more carbs and calories but he's really active. I've always been a carb eater too.

The thing with gestational diabetes is that some women can control it easily through diet and for some you can’t - you can eat all the right things as recommended and still be spiking high fasting levels without knowing as it’s driven by your pregnancy hormones. I ate so healthily that I ended up the same weight when I gave birth as I did when I fell pregnant, but my levels kept spiking and I needed metformin and insulin. So I get why they are pushy, as it’s not the same with every pregnancy.
