Telling your job you’re pregnant or not?

Hey moms!!! just had a question to ask. I worked at a hotel about a month ago and told them i was pregnant and they basically gave me less hours and told me that it really wouldn’t work out. Now i’m Omw to an interview and i was wondering if i should wait to tell them im pregnant when im showing ? or when is a good time to tell a new job that your pregnant?

How far along are you? I wouldn’t tell and tell in 2 months. It’s what I did at my current job where I’ve been for 3 years now

I wouldn’t tell them quite yet. Also for them to do that to you is illegal since pregnancy discrimination is against the law …. but I know it’s hard to fight since Florida is a at will state

Following because I just started a new job 2 weeks ago and never told them. I am 14 weeks

@Paola i’m 2 months and i have my interview today

@Emily yess it was so hard and so unfair because i’m such a hard worker , im 2 months rn

They straight up discriminated you for being pregnant that’s illegal. But I would wait a bit before letting her know

@Aleigha when do you think you’re gonna tell them?

Ngl I didn’t tell my job until I was 6 months because I was really showing so it looked like a gut belly lol

@Kayla<3 😂 okayy that’s smart ! how’d you tell them & what they say?

@Harmony I honestly have no clue. Probably within the next month or so. Reason being, I work in the medical field and am around a lot of patients and don't want to be exposed to something that I don't have to be. I have been avoiding situations like that if they do come up. If I was in a different profession, I would probably wait longer. I've seen so many different answers on google, like the beginning of the second trimester, 20-22 weeks, 6 months, 30 days before your planned leave, etc.

I would wait until you get hired. It might be really hard to prove that they declined to hire you due to pregnancy, but just to be safe I wouldn’t bring it up until well after you are hired. Good luck tho! 🤞🤞

@Aleigha i see i deftly understand especially in the medical field it’s way different compared to the restaurant industry. Yes i seen so many answers. I’ll probably just wait till i really show

When I got pregnant I told them at the interview because it was just how the conversation was going with the manager because we were being friendly. I think you could mention it just to like let them know. Or you could wait. But also you might want to figure out what the rules are for maternity leave. Like do you have to work there for a certain amount of time before you can get paid? Or is it unpaid or what.

@Ciera yess i just don’t want to do the same thing again , thank youu!!❤️

Also what’s the job if you don’t mind me asking

@Gabrielle yes i did that at the hotel job and thought everything was fine until he told me about giving me less hours since im pregnant and how im gonna leave in a couple of months and to come back when i have the baby etc. I think for this one im gonna play it safe and wait 🙏🏽, yes i deftly have to look into that.

@Gabrielle it’s a sushi bowl/smoothie restaurant, i’ll be front cash, making the bowls and smoothies, taking care of customers & keeping the dining room clean

@Harmony I just said I was prego 😭I couldn’t fit my work pants anymore so ig that was my time to tell them

@Kayla<3 😭😭lmaoo love that!

What your job did was ilegal. There is a pregnancy act that protects you. They have to give you accommodations. I would have them put that in writing. And ask in writing why they are reducing your hours since you told them about your pregnancy. EVERYTHING IN WRITTING. You need to create a paper trail.

@Samantha i did the interview for this new job and got the job i didn’t tell them i pregnant but for this one when i do tell them should i write something down for them to sign?

I'm happy for you. No, tell them when you feel comfortable. What you can do is send an email after thanking them for their support now that you are pregnant and blabla. This creates evidence that you communicated the situation. See how they react. If they start doing the same thing, for every interaction, create a "recap" email. You are protected. But I hope this new job does not make you feel like you have to do all of this. Companies do not put anything in writing that they know it is illegal. that is why if they are doing something bad, they will correct you in the email and probably go back on their own word about the conversation. Not answering or putting something that would harm you (mentally or physically) during pregnancy can open grounds for a lawsuit, which every company wants to avoid. Wish you the best!

@Harmony That's a good idea! My scrubs are for sure getting snugger though so it won't be too long 😂 Congrats on getting the job! Everything will work out 😊

@Samantha thank you so much for all this information!!! i’m definitely going to send an email. Thank you!!❤️❤️

@Aleigha 😂😂, thank you girl!!❤️

I waited till I was 6 months to let my job know

You will need to file all of the paperwork for FMLA by 30 weeks, if eligible, so need to tell them before then. General guidance is to tell around 20weeks once anatomy scan is good and you start showing/can’t hide it anymore. I would only tell earlier if you have severe symptoms like nausea that need accommodation prior to then.

Don’t tell them. It’s none of their business and legally they can’t ask.
