Contraception

I went to my baby’s 8 week check up and jabs today and was offered contraception, I asked about the Depo vaccine but the doctor was very against giving it to me incase I want another baby in a year (I definitely don’t want another just yet) and has now put me on the mini pill. The mini pill is called Desogestrel and I was wondering if anyone else is taking it or has taken it and their experience with it?

I took this for a few months before I started ttc and had absolutely no issues. But it's weird your doctor wouldn't agree to your first choice of contraception! Could you see a different one or go get it from a sexual health clinic?

Yes this is the contraception I have been on for 10 years, personally, it worked brilliantly as a contraceptive to prevent me from having babies and when I came off it both times I have been able to conceive within a few months. It stopped all my periods as it's one you take continuously which I loved, but hated the mood changes that came with it at the time of the month when i should have been having my period. I personally used to feel quite low at times and would lack motivation, but this may not happen to you. I'm opting for the hormone free coil this time I think, its time for me to try something new! I second what Hattie has said about your GP though, it should be your choice which contraception you want to be on, we have family planning clinics in our area that could help with the depot if that's what you really want, have a Google for your local area x

@Hattie yeah it was quite weird that he advised against it but I definitely didn’t want the coil or the implant again so it was either the pill or the depo. I’ve got the pills so will see how they go and then go see the sexual health clinic.

@Sophie thank you. I’ve been a bit worried about taking it but going to give it a go and see how these first 3 months go. I have a few brooks sexual health clinics near me so will go if this pill doesn’t agree with me x

I was on the depo for 8 years before I had my baby and it took 2 years for me to ovulate again, but the pill only takes a short time to leave your system so it's probably better to be on the pill if you did intend to have any more children 😊

Doctor should let you choose your contraception, and also not question your decision of having a baby in a year or not. If I were you I'd go see someone else than this doctor
