Insurance for what?

I signed up for Medicaid and had a home birth, but even without insurance a home birth is much cheaper than a hospital birth if you're in the US.

No problem, paid the midwife up front. Had a home birth and carried on with my life.

@Tamara🫶🏼 health/medical

I don’t know what a regular insurance would cover, but if you possibly can I’d suggest buying insurance the month you plan on giving birth so that way it can take a few thousand off and then maybe you can cancel it? Idk if that’s an option, but I’d look into it if you can.

Do you not qualify for Medicaid? Did you go in person to the office to apply? Sometimes they will put only some of your income in their system to help you ….. uh… qualify 😅. Also try public hospitals they typically are cheaper.

Insurance prices are fixed. The hospital charges insurance companies a fixed, agreed on price. The insurance pretends to cover things, but you still have to pay out of pocket after your 'coverage' and after paying your premiums and deductibles. If you don't have insurance, hospitals typically have a self-pay rate, which is usually cheaper than if you were insured, and you have way more leverage to negotiate the price/fees. Let's be real, insurance is a joke and a scam.

@Cindy I might try to see if that's doable.

@Wendi I applied for renewal and was denied due to income being "too high" I wish that were true otherwise paying monthly expenses wouldn't be an issue. We can't even buy groceries some pay days 😒

@Heather scam is right.

@Britany how did you do you home birth? Did you have a doula?

@Cierra I did! I had a doula and found a couple midwiferies. I interviewed with them and settled on one I liked and my midwife recommended a couple of doulas so I did the same process with them. I had two midwives and a doula. Midwives were there for health checks and making sure we were progressing accordingly, doula was there to help me emotionally, mentally and physically. I could not have done it without my doula. She was incredible and so motivational.
