Potty Training

Day 3 of potty training and it’s going great, no accidents so far today 🤞🏻, but I’m reminding him to go and taking him to the potty every time. How do I teach him to “hold” it and how long does it take for him to decide to go for himself. I feel like if I didn’t have him on a schedule he would just have accidents all day. I feel like he’s going every 30 minutes which seems excessive, obviously I’m giving him things to drink so he could practice. How will we ever leave the house? 😂

They just have to get used to recognizing the sensation in their body that they have to go. You may have a few accidents but I would actually avoid doing too strict of a schedule like that. Let him take the lead in telling you he has to go. That’s truly what potty training is - when they can independently identify the need to go. The Dr. Becky potty training guide was really helpful and worked well for my son.

@GMF How long did it take for your toddler to start to recognize the signs? We had a moment I was really proud of last night where he held his crotch and we were like “run to the potty!” And we made it! I’m hoping to have more moments like that.

The first half of day 1 he had all accidents and never made it to the potty. Then it was like something clicked and he figured it out after that. We only stayed home for 1.5 days and on day 3 he went back to daycare (but obviously they help with potty training as well and knew we were doing it). He was potty trained at the end of June and I rarely ever ask him at all if he needs to go. I only do if he’s in the middle of something I think he may be trying not to stop doing and it looks like signs are there he needs to go. But honestly he knows his body now!

@GMF that is awesome! Thank you!
