Should I be concerned about lack of secure toilets at Pre-school?

My child is due to start Pre-school in September. It's a pack away setting so not purpose built and the toilets are shared with the rest of the community building. As you enter through a locked door there is a space in the corridor for the children to put their coats/bags and then another locked door to the main setting which is two rooms plus a locked door to the secure garden. However, the corridor where they hang their coats leads to toilets that are shared with a door that is left unopened throughout the day for classes and community groups attending the room next door. The children are taken to the toilet in groups however this means that there is the risk they could run away/someone could enter at this point from the open door or steal coats/bags. I'm really affected like a lot of us were by the recent news stories and I'm shocked that this isn't more secure. What would you do? I'm a stay at home Mum looking after my newborn so she could stay with me longer if I don't feel that she'll be safe. Please be kind. x

Personally I think your making a bigger deal about it than needs be, Your child isn’t their first child, I’m not sure how long it’s been open but if nothing has never happened before (not saying that it can’t in future) then you are making a bigger deal than there needs to be, I get it if there has been an incident before your child starting, The staff are never going to leave the children to go toilet or in the toilet to escape and I’m sure there would be more than 1 maybe 2 members of staff taking them, From my experience all staff will go when they take all the children and then if it’s only a few at a time then only 1 or 2 members of staff are needed, no1 is getting out of the door

Thank you - just what I needed to hear x

Sorry if it sounded harsh, didn’t mean it to be xx

I personally would also feel uneasy about this. Have you spoken to the staff about this. They might reassure you on the process of safety in place. If not then it’s good to highlight your concerns! In my toddlers nursery, the kids go to their dedicated toilets themselves which is directly next to their room and only call out to carers when finished. This happens throughout the day and each child has individual needs. So I’m not sure how staff would stay on top of this detached toilet space arrangement you e described and keep an eye on all other kids in the room at the same time. What is the staff to kids ratio?

I think your concern is valid - but I’m sure not an issue. They are probably aware the set up isn’t perfect but can talk you through how they mitigate the risk

Thank you everyone xx
