GD newly diagnosed

Diagnosed with GD today, quite anxious to what I can eat and can’t. Waiting to be referred to the diabetes clinic. Can you drink the pro milk protein shakes from Aldi? What snacks to people eat? What breakfast options are good? Is it just a case of cutting our cakes, chocolates, biscuits etc? Then having more protein and veg and a little bit of carbs? Any help would be much appreciated

Mine told me about carb distribution throughout the day. It’s not necessary sweets it’s carbs that turn into sugars. 30 or less carbs are breakfast. 15-20 carbs per snack. And 40-50 carbs for lunch and then dinner. Try eating small snacks frequently. I also learned that if I don’t space out my snacks and meals that will mess with my meal glucose numbers. I’m eating protein shakes, Kodiak waffles, fruit, veggies, low carb meals, protein bars, hard boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, I can’t cut carbs out completely because I’m starving. I’m doing Ezekiel bread that’s flourless and high in whole grains. Was told fiber also fills you up. Because I’m still starving on a protein diet. And I have been cutting back for the last 3 weeks.

Hi! At a really basic level, look for the number of carbs and added sugars. Also looking for things that are high in protein and fiber. I'm not familiar with those added shakes, but if they have added sugar, you'll want to be careful. There are specific numbers of carbs you will get guidance on to aim for for snacks and meals. Some ideas for meals and snacks: Yoghurt with berries and granola Whole grain or sour dough toast with avocado and egg Snacks: string cheese Dark chocolate (careful of the added sugars) Freeze dried fruit snacks We all react to things differently. So some things will work for you and not others and vice versa. Good luck! You got this!

With myself I moved to all wholemeal stuff and made sure to have protein with my carbs. I found in the morning I cant have anymore than 25g of cabs the wholemeal bagel thins have been my goto with cheese or eggs then lunch around 50g ive been doing BLT on hovis seed bread and dinner 60g which i found is more than i thought. Snack wise I've been having fruit, protein yoghuarts, salted popcorn, sugar free jelly, sugar free ice pops. Just keep the carbs to about 15g for the snack. The hospital give me a whole list of stuff that's better to eat. I've found making sure I eat all meals and snack has helped with feeling hungry but iam also on metformin so my levels are now way below.

I’ve been on it a while now and it’s the second time. I’m still learning all the time what i can have. Lots of eggs for breakfast or Greek yogurt, chia seeds and fruit Lunch is a struggle at work, I love a salad in the summer and soup in the winter. Make your soups with a bone broth disk from m and s and that ramps up the protein! I can have many homemade soups but never bought ones. For evening meal I find meat and veg the best. I do have some carbs but within limit. Never have mash! But I can tolerate new potatoes or a couple of chips. Some days it’s whole new recipes and other days it’s adaptations like an open sandwhich or a Bunless burger. Some adaptations I make are fajitas I will have one wrap, the rest in lettuce cups. Lasagne with less sheets. Pasta but up the protein and eat all that first so I’m only hungry for a small amount of whole meal pasta. Strangely I tolerate freezer food like chicken dippers, fish cakes so I have them nochocol

Snacks I love the nairns biscuits if you have a sweet tooth, I pair with cheese string. Or I have a passion fruit. Crisps I have teddy bears and some cheese. Roasted pumpkin seeds salted are becoming a fave too. Oh and oppo icecream pairs It’s not fun but it is doable. I’m 22 weeks now and been in it since 4 weeks pregnant. This is my second (and last time) any questions just ask. You’ll learn what works for you.

The best thing to do is to stick to a Mediterranean diet. But most importantly stay away from rice. Also you may notice that other foods may spike for you but not for others so be mindful. Try to be active the first hour after a meal. My little girl is almost 3 months and weighed 6’11 from diet control.
