OB Appointments

Hi ladies! Serious question about prenatal care. I was seeing an OBGYN since the start of my pregnancy as well as a MFM doctor a month into finding out. The regular OB was sloppy and disorganized as they mixed up my patient file thinking I was 18 weeks when I was only 8 at one point and they don’t have good bedside manner. When I was getting my initial prenatal blood test I asked the tech to repeat something and she laughed and said “haha you already have pregnancy brain huh?” Was going to the regular OB until June when my husband lost his job and we lost insurance. Since his new job now in August, I am continuing to see my MFM but don’t see the point of seeing the regular OB as they’re going to repeat the same things the fetal specialists tell me (they did my anatomy scan and heart scans all came out healthy). My question is is it necessary to see both? Especially since my experience with the regular obgyn was terrible. My maternal fetal doctor is fantastic and thoroughly goes through my health needs and follows up every few weeks with scans. Since they’re specialists it’s a little more expensive out of pocket but they give me way more information than the obgyn. I’m 25 weeks now and I’m stuck considering I don’t want to go to the OB and I’m not sure if it’s too late to switch obgyn this far along. I also don’t understand the registering for certain hospitals through your OB, is it not possible to go to a hospital without consent of a regular OB? Please help me out this is my first pregnancy.

Hi! So sorry to hear that! From what I understand you can change obgyn’s at any time! You should definitely feel comfortable with yours so they can answer all your questions about how to register for a hospital and so on. I love my ob, she’s in Santa Monica, I’d be happy to give you her info if you’re local

Hi incognito! The obgyn is usually who delivers your baby. I know at the hospital I am going to they usually want you to already have one assigned before you go into labor. While (from my understanding) MFD monitor the baby mostly and can help with delivering your baby but they're usually not the ones in the labor suite with you unless you have some special circumstance. I also know here in NYC most places will not take you in for new OBGYN stuff past 18 weeks so depending on where you are, you may be kinda stuck. You can always go back and ask for a different ob and see what happens. Best of luck

I forgot to touch on the part about going to the hospital! Lol. From what I've researched on my own and been told you can't just walk into any hospital to give birth. I know it has a lot do with insurance and while a hospital can't deny you service according to the law but, I think it just makes it easier for them. You can also if all else fails with your old ob ask for a referral to a different OB and explain to them you're not happy there. I'm kinda in the same boat where I don't like my ob either but it's the physically closest hospital I have where I live so options are limited for me. My last appointment I just expressed to them my concerns and how I wasn't in agreement with a lot of things they were saying and doing and they apologized to me so maybe clearing the air could also help

I changed my OB at 28 weeks last pregnancy. It was a pain but worth not being gaslit and abused anymore

So typically your MFM will no be someone who does deliveries. That said I have never managed to get my OB to be there for any of my deliveries anyway and just went with the hospital on call physician. If you don’t care like me then I’m. It sure you truly need to see both (I am currently doing so but I love my OB and she takes time to talk to me about anything I need even via email) look into the hospitals near you and their policy on birth/delivery self pay vs insurance and if you need to be a current patient (I’ve never had an issue) just so you are informed and know what you need. Worst case you need to get an ob and have a few appointments with them but we are almost to our due dates and hopefully things can go smoothly for you!
