Advice Before Starting first IVF Cycle

Hi there - My partner and I are starting our first IVF cycle at the end of this month. I wanted to reach out to you all to see if there is anything I can do to prepare beforehand. I’ve done a foam test to make sure my tubes were open and they are open, but otherwise I’ve never done a hysteroscopy because I’ve never been told to do one. Should I get a hysteroscopy before starting IVF just in case?

I've never had a hysteroscopy, but we had IVF for male factor infertility. We had no reason to believe I needed any further investigations so I guess it depends why you're having IVF in the first place.

Thanks. That makes sense. We are doing it for mild PCOS and potential mild male factor so no reason to think I need a hysteroscopy .. I guess I won’t look into it until I know I need to

I would do whatever the dr recommends-ivf is so much you definitely don’t need to take on more than needed! I purchased a package from myvitro before starting and I used for all my ivf rounds. Also recommend getting a big calendar - both of these things help stay organized! Last, if you need to pay anything out of pocket, I’d call your insurance and ask to speak to someone about medications - sometimes the “same” meds cost way way more than others depending on coverage. Best of luck!!!

Big calendar to write all your AM and PM drugs on and all your appointments. Note book - I wrote up notes after each appointment as I just couldn’t remember it all! Both no drinking and smoking and eat heathily. Take all your pre- conception vitamins. Sperm takes 3mths to “make” so your husband should be on a complete detox to ensure the best is collected! Good luck :)

I asked my ob-gyn about this as we're meant to start our first IVF cycle next week and he said it wasn't necessary as IVF by-pass the tubes. We had 2 losses so think my tubes are fine but I just asked it in case something has changed since our last loss in March. Hope this helps x

Hi! My husband and I did ivf due to male factor infertility and my mild pcos. I’ve never had a hysteroscopy. I recommend no alcohol at all and no caffeine. But everyone is different. These are things I have done during our ivf cycle. Take all your vitamins. I took prenatal, myo inositol, fish oil, coq10, probiotic, magnesium faithfully. I stopped drinking alcohol and caffeine ending of March and our Ivf cycle was May-June this year. Egg retrieval was mid June. Right now we are going thru FET cycle. I agree with the big calendar to write down the times for meds cus it will be a lot! Also for transfer medication (PIO shot) I recommend the auto injector as those needles are insane! Eat a high protein diet. I do also agree with contacting your insurance to verify coverage on meds. Since my insurance doesn’t cover ivf and some meds we ended up doing a bundle for everything at a discounted rate. Partner should also take good vitamins and include coq10 for sperm quality. Good luck!!!!
