Gestational diabetes

I found out on Friday and got diagnosed with this. It’s natural to panic right? Just wanted some advice and your stories and opinions on it :) and how long you had to wait to be referred for growth scans and the diabetic team/dietician? Thank you

💯 normal to panic! I had a full breakdown when I found out. It's super easy to blame yourself but I promise this diagnosis has NOTHING to do with you or anything you've done ❤️ Had to have a few conversations with the GD midwives to understand this, but just reach out to them if you need support or reassurance. I was diagnosed at 26 weeks and referred the same day (but I think they were keen to get me into a class that was already planned for the next day). You will get sent a load of resources but I'm happy to share the links with you via DM if you want to do some pre reading 🙂 In my area we only get one extra growth scan (32 weeks) but some areas you also get one at 28 weeks too. The hardest thing is the diet. If you have strong cravings or food aversions, it can feel difficult. But you generally can have carbs and treats, you just have to balance them with enough protein, etc. ❤️

God yeah I've had it twice and panicked both times! Are you in the UK or elsewhere as the growth scans are different in different places. Once you get the hang of it it gets a bit easier. I've kept mine diet controlled both times and I'm a really fussy eater. Look into food pairing as it's important not to completely cut carbs (I made that mistake last time).

I grieved and cried for a week. Was angry for a while and still annoyed by it. I feel extremely guilty any time I eat that I’m hurting her or making her gain weight. I worry about her high or low blood sugar if I’m even impacting her. I absolutely hate restricting my food and pricking my finger. I’m eating soooo much more healthier this last three weeks than this whole pregnancy. I’m just hoping for the best. Still haven’t been put on meds but I feel like I’m just cheating the system by being defiant. My choice. I’m just still struggling with the overall game plan. I prefer meds of insulin.

I totally freaked out being told I have it at 32 weeks but I had my baby 2 months ago now and promise it will be fine I was induced in the end not even due to gd but had a growth scan and showed my water was low, all was fine x I also managed to stay diet controlled honestly the only way I did was by joining the gestational diabetes uk group and following that diet on there it’s great for support too c feel free to message me if u want about anything I can always try help x

Also I wasn’t ever refered to a specific team i don’t think I just sent in my readings every Sunday.d and if all was ok I didn’t see or speak to anyone just saw a consultant when I was 39 weeks to discuss inductions etc

I was diagnosed last week as well and wasn’t expecting it. The midwife explained everything really well and my readings have been in the green so it doesn’t mean that your current diet is necessarily bad. I would look at whether your current diet is bad according to your daily readings and then change your diet where necessary. Also, a mistake many people do: don’t cut carbs out of your diet. They are paramount for our health still! Just limit the quick release one and increase the slow release (brown bread, pasta, rice, etc). Good luck!

Thank you so much. All of you, I have been so worried and you have all helped me feel like I’m not alone. 🤍

@Libby yes I’m in the Uk. I’m so so fussy with my food n a lot of my cravings have been cookie dough chocolate etc. I feel so so guilty feel like I’ve got mum guilt before he’s even here anything I put in my mouth I feel awful hoping and asking myself will he be okay 😢🤍

@Louisa it's nothing you've done in the run up to this point. You could have had the healthiest diet in the world and still been diagnosed with GD. Start with the website Gestational Diabetes UK and have a good read through it. It will help your understanding a huge amount. I signed up for access to the recipes at £5pcm. Worth it for the chocolate brownies recipe alone 😂

@Libby omg I’m downloading 😂😂🤍

I was really upset at first and felt like I had done something wrong. But honestly you have nothing to worry about. My team has been great and I have managed it with diet. As Libby said there are some good recipes on the GD UK site, and on the main diabetes UK site. Also a lot of Keto recipes online are good. Feel free to reach out if you want any advice or support or just looking for a recipe recommendation! You got this! ❤️

I was diagnosed at 26 weeks and have to do those print tests 3 x a day. I was offered growth scans at 32 and 36 weeks. I have been checked up regularly and nurses gives feedback on my readings x

Ahh thank you all so much you have all been so helpful and kind ❤️xx
