Positive outcomes on oral health after pregnancy

My gum health has declined a lot since getting pregnant. They’re not painful but they’re inflamed and in some parts, quite loose around my teeth 🫠 Dentist isn’t super concerned and said I can wait til after baby’s born for a deep cleaning. I know it can get better after baby’s born but if anyone has positive stories to share about their mouth healing after birth, please share! I’m nervous 😅

I did my cleaning every 6 months even when I was pregnant, it's safe. Don't understand the need to wait 🤔

@Alessia bc the deep cleaning requires antibiotics which they don’t suggest while pregnant!

Quite common for this happen. during pregnancy. Happened to me for my first 2 and my current pregnancy. I've just been more diligent about flossing and actually brushing my gums as well. It has helped a bit. My dentist wasn't concerned as they assured me once my hormones and stuff calmed down, my gums would also. You just kinda have to wait it out unfortunately

Oil pulling has helped for me.

Omg antibiotics for a dental cleaning??? Where are you from? Never heard of it. You take antibiotics if you have an infection not for cleaning. Unless they don't use not sterilised instrument, that's it

Not sure about antibiotic comment either. Unless it looks like you need some teeth to be pulled out? Some antibiotics are fine during pregnancy too. But no, cleaning, scaling, polishing don’t require antibiotics. At home you should be brushing your teeth gently with soft bristle brush, flossing every day and you can use mouth wash if you’re gums are inflamed aka gingivitis

With time, if you follow good dental hygiene practices, gingivitis will go away. But depends on severity

@Leslie thank you!

@Kayla thank you!

Dental hygienist and therapist here. Not sure where you’re from and what the standard practice is there, but it’s unusual that you’d need antibiotics for a clean, even a deep clean. And if it’s serious enough that you need antibiotics, why is it safe to wait til after you’ve given birth? Seems strange to me. Could you see someone else for second opinion? In the meantime as others have said brush your gums gently but thoroughly and use interdental brushes or floss every day, even if they bleed.

Oil pulling!
