Gd and post meal readings

I got diagnosed with GD today. I had it in my previous pregnancy 2 yrs ago and it was easily managed by diet. I’ve started testing today & my readings after lunch and dinner have been 8.6/8.7 It’s already really getting me down😔 I’m sat here absolutely starving but I’m too scared to have anything to eat. And I don’t want to keep living off rich tea biscuits and nuts for snacks. It just doesn’t feel a proper way to live ESPECIALLY when you’re pregnant with cravings and hungry all the time. They did say if it can’t be diet controlled this time then they would put me on metformin. Am I beating myself up too early? I don’t have an apt for 2 weeks so don’t know when to check in if this carries on.

Don't starve yourself lovely find safe foods you enjoy and you can eat as much as you like. My treat was a big bowl of yogurt with a few berries and great a bit of dark chocolate on top yum yum. And snacks like veg sticks and hummus or apple and peanut butter or too much cheese lol. You got this and if it needs to be medically controlled it isn't you failing is your body needing help that's all x

I was told if I had three high readings in a 7 day period and I didn’t have an appointment that week to call them so my appointment could be moved forward, my first pregnancy I had GD and it was diet controlled until 32 weeks then on metformin, I didn’t have it with my second and third pregnancy however I have it again with my fourth and I’m already on insulin at 21 weeks 😫 I try not to restrict myself too much as I actually find sometimes my readings are higher with a simple meal like chicken with veg, than what they are if I eat a greggs! Xx

Don't beat yourself up you can't control how well your body processes glucose. Second time gd mum here too and with my first I ended up on insulin and Metformin. Recently diagnosed again and a week of testing they've put me straight back on them again. Started Tuesday and first fasting reading in range today 🙌🏼 But there is a lot of stuff you can eat just focus on protein etc for snacks. Don't know if you are UK based but here is a helpful website and FB group with loads of ideas. https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/gestationaldiabetesuk/?ref=share The website has lots of gd friendly recipes, snacks ideas, basically everything you need to know.

I was diagnosed with late onset GD Unable to get my sugar levels low from fasting overnight after breakfast readings was also no better, but the day I was able to manage surprisingly well. Snack between so that my sugars stayed stable X2 Rice cakes hummous/cheese cubes/chicken slices, etc. All very small portions, and this helped my readings evenings are sometimes a hit and miss as they wanted me to eat before 7 pm but working full time and then stuck in 1hr + traffic I was unable to achieve this. And I did notice my readings were higher when I ate later in the evening. With the metformin, I have noticed that some mornings/ days are better than others Ultimately, the diet changes are for your baby sake so they don't gain too much weight from the sugar. I developed polyhydramnios ( extra fluid in the amniotic sac) and preparing to have my baby girl 2 weeks early on Sunday. Whatever you are doing be kind to yourself You are only human Sometimes Dr's put so much pressure on us!!

I got diagnosed at 19, didn’t think I’d have it so I was shocked. It’s not your fault that this time round you might need a bit more help, it’s our hormone levels playing us all up 🙄 make a note of what you ate if your readings are high and they’ll tell you where you went wrong and how to get back on track. The amount of high readings I had before they put me on metformin… I can’t count 😂 they’re going to understand if you needed a treat or pick me up. But don’t beat yourself up over it, metformin will help and after I think 32 weeks we start to get more resistant to insulin. Just remember, we’re suffering but not for long, it will hopefully 🤞 go away and we can eat what we want after, it’s not our fault we have GD it’s just hormone levels and if we need that little bit of help by metformin, use it and think it’s helpful to you and baby! 😊
