NHS penalty charge letter

Has anyone received an NHS penalty charge letter for claiming free prescription when you have just had the baby? I’ve just received one and this is the first time a maternity exemption certificate has been mentioned. My son is now 4 months old, I had needed a prescription 2 months before he was born. I’m just really annoyed as no doctor or midwife ever mentioned I needed one of these to get a free prescription. I’ve emailed them in hope I can just send the baby’s birth certificate but don’t think they will accept that, it’s a £100 charge plus prescription charge, just not what I want especially as I feel it’s not my fault!

I’ve received one also stating there is no evidence received about my pregnancy- feel like sending them a photo in response of my belly and one of my now one week old 😅. When I get chance intend to speak to the community midwife about it

I've had the same because my midwife forgot to issue me a maternity exemption certificate, I emailed them with a photograph of my matb1 instead and they let me just pay the prescription charge and took off the £100 penalty

It’s so annoying especially if it is your first baby like it is with me. I don’t know what I need or not etc. Hopefully they will do that to me @Nadine

Yes I had this when I was pregnant. I think you can still ask for a maternity certificate, then if you provide a copy to them they will probably waive the penalty, but still make you pay for the prescription itself.

@Sally I wasn’t sure if I got one now if it would have the date on from now or cover me for throughout pregnancy and the year after. This letter is for a prescription from April

I received a couple with my first pregnancy, I wasn't told I needed to send the form off so I got one a month for a couple months ( I'm on regular medication) Now they should be automatically sent off and your midwife should have given you one around 25 weeks. If you got one now it would cover you from now until baby is 1 but won't cover previous months

Yeah they won't backdate it, more than 4 weeks I think. But they used the end date of the cert to confirm that I was pregnant when I had the prescriptions, so they waived the penalty based on that x

You just apply online for the exemption certificate... https://maternity-exemption.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/apply/start

I have but because the pharmacist ticked the wrong thing. I rang them and spoke to someone who just updated the system and cancelled the charge

I got one as didn't know I needed the certificate as FTM and no one told me. I contacted them and went to my GP filled out a form ASAP to submit for one. It came back pretty fast. I didn't have to pay for the fine just had to pay for the 1 prescription x

My partners sister had this exact thing.. she wasn't issued one and 4 months down the line had a big fine. She told them she isn't paying and if they want proof she they can see her baby and birth certificate. They haven't chased her to this day and her little one is over 1y now

@Abi i would have sent them the video of me pushing that baby out of my snatch. Play with my time

🤣🤣 I got one last week as i used my mat b 1 form (didnt know about a certificate). They told me to get a cert from my GP and in the mean time they will place my fine on hold until October on the condition I get a certificate. They will still send the fine in a couple of weeks and told me to just pay the prescription charge and if I have the cert by the deadline they have set they will cancel the fine. It literally took about 5 days from filling in the form at my GP to receiving the certificate.

My midwife gave me a form to fill in and get my GP to sign. I forgot to do this and then needed a prescription, ticked the box and got a fine. I appealed as per the letter and was advised to apply for the exemption certificate and then would waive the fees but I would still need to pay the original prescription charge. I went to my GP, they signed the form and sent it off for me. I didnt need to do anything else.

Pretty sure if you ask for one it now it will show the dates from conception to a year after birth (my old one did anyways) and you can use that as evidence you had it. I had one by mistake once and just sent a photo of my card and it was dropped
