I was diagnosed on Monday at 36 weeks. I’ve not had any symptoms, or indicators like sugar in my wee and no family history so it was a shock! Firstly - it’s not your fault. It’s rubbish but is just a hormone thing - some people get it, some people don’t. If you’ve been referred already I’d imagine they’ll be in touch to book you in for an appointment. In mine (it was a group thing) they spoke to us about what GD is, what it means for us/baby, gave us blood glucose monitors and explained how we’d test our blood sugars. Depending on the results of your initial test they’ll probably start you off trying to control it with your diet, this basically means cutting back on carbs and increasing fat and protein. If it can’t be kept under control with diet, they may look at medications like metformin or insulin, but the team will talk through all of that. It feels scary but it’s good that they’ve caught it and can keep a closer eye on you and baby!

There’s lots of useful info online and I’ve found the website gestationaldiabetes.co.uk really helpful, especially for food and recipe ideas

Thank you so much lsabel you have just made me feel better

Let yourself feel the emotions you need to feel and if you need to wallow for a day or so, that’s fine! It’ll get easier. When they told me I had it I was gutted, I felt like I’d failed somehow and felt teary for the whole day, but a couple of days later I feel much better and more positive. You’ve got this 💪🏻

@Lizzie thank you

They have meals, you can download, loads of advice, it's UK based info, loads of support, and files to read through. They've been amazing, I'm a secret follower.

I was also diagnosed with GD at 16week, and I have never had any reason to use medication as I have cut down my carbs and eat lots of protein, and I am 30weeks now my readings has been fine and my diabetic doctor is happy for me, is not easy but you have too keep going as you will overcome it. No history of diabetes in my family and no sugar in my urine. So it’s just d fuxking homone that’s slows down during pregnancy.
