Private health insurance with pregnancy and birth cover

Hi there. What did everyone else pay for private health insurance with the pregnancy and birth added in Australia? I want to give birth in a private rather public hospital but the quotes I have been given are all above $6,000 annually. Is this what other people paid? Thanks

To be covered for obstetric you usually need the top cover, it’s wild. Ours is about $6700 a year and when I’ve shopped around in the past we wouldn’t be able to get the same coverage for less than that. The actual birth and pregnancy in a private hospital with a private OB cost about $7k out of pocket, with the highest private health cover. It would have been about $11k out of pocket if I had a csec. Keep in mind if you’re already pregnant you need to be covered for the waiting period too, which is usually 12 months.

$250 a fortnight for family cover. We have top cover & top hospital

I pay around 450$ a fortnight. As others have said though, remember they all have waiting periods, so if you're pregnant already it's useless.

I paid $330 per month with Bupa. It was just for me and It was a cover for temporary visa that I have. But they coveted everything upto the Medicare costs. Nothing more. So I still had to pay a few things out of pocket. Like the private obstetrician charged me $4200 as the cost for managing pregnancy and being available anytime after week 28. For this I only got back $500 from Bupa as Medicare covers that much. Similarly the ultrasound and doc visits were partially reimbursed. But the hospitalisation was completely covered 100%. And that was like $13000. So I am glad this helped. I started the insurance 12 months before I got pregnant. That is important.

I’m paying $130 per fortnight for top cover to include pregnancy and birth.

I was paying 540 a month for top gold and great extras under couple cover with Ahm I had to pay 800 oop, had cs and stayed 5 nights xx

I am now paying $400 a month with bupa with top family coverage. I went private and spent 3k out of pocket for the management and delivery fee for the OB and $110 consultation fee per visit. I did get some money back from Medicare for these fees but having a chronic pelvic complications I wanted the continuity of care and would 100% pay all that again ❤️

Parent of 1, I had gold cover from Bupa for myself and my partner had his own. It was $200 a fortnight and still is. I gave birth privately in WCH so all my obstetrics and birth was covered. I stayed a week and a saw that Bupa covered almost 6K. I stayed 5 nights due to some issues. I fully understand wanting to go private completely. I wanted to as well but I had some health issues and I was informed that if there were serious issues that I could be sent to a public hospital anyway. I loved my OB so it wasn’t a hard decision. After the birth as I am planning on having another, I am still paying gold cover but it is just me. My daughter is on standard cover with my partner. After all my daughter and partner don’t need to be on top cover even if an accident or sickness occurs. Just something to note as I was paying almost double for nothing for a while there.

I pay approx $190 a month for top hospital cover, which includes pregnancy. Another thing to consider is that your outpatient appointments aren’t covered and in most cases, OBGYN’s charge about $10,000 for management fees.
