Hypos

Would this concern anyone or has anyone experienced this before? I’m 23.5 weeks and have been admitted into hospital for three days for blood pressure of 186/154. I’ve been released on blood pressure medication, weekly assessments of bp urine and bloods. And I’ve got a growth scan booked for a week tomorrow to check placenta and my little girls growth. I’ve been diagnosed with GD since 12 weeks. It’s my second GD pregnancy but my first was always on the big side 95%+ etc. in the last two weeks they’ve stopped my fasting insulin and dropped my meal insulin from 14 units per meal to now 2. I know this can happen at 35+ weeks just wondering if anyone’s experienced it earlier and what was the outcome. All they keep saying is reduce insulin. We’ll one more drop and I’ll be off it completely but I was getting 14/15 two weeks ago and even a week ago had loads of 9/10’s so I’ve definitely got GD etx. Thank you for any advice 😊

Hi Hannah, have you recently started using the Libra monitor? When I switched I found that my readings were lower than my finger prick test. So not sure that it’s right for me.

@Gemma thank you Gemma. Yeah I had an issue with my first libre where it was way lower then my finger prick. I’ve got an new one and sadly all those hypos are matched on finger prick machine 🤦‍♀️. It’s honestly worse then highs. I used to get highs lots so I’d walk drink water and not eat till it came down. But I’ve had these an hour after a meal and I mean I can’t eat anymore 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️. Not really a big eater naturally but i snack and do all the things your meant to. I’ve upped my carbohydrates a little just to keep level and still crashes right down. I know your placenta can cause this and it can also cause the high blood pressure I’ve got just hoping it’s not that and not preclampsia as only 24 weeks this week. It’s just really frustrating and I’ve gone off orange juice 😂🤦‍♀️. The amount I’ve had to drink to correct them. Just wondered apart from placenta is there’s any other causes people know off? Xx thank you 😊

@Gemma did you get your sensor sorted in the end? I think if your getting different readings tell your midwife if you haven’t and they should hopefully give you a new one that works. My first one was awful for in range readings when my finger prick was always high 🤦‍♀️xx

Mine was a free trial as I was told I can’t get it on the nhs as I’ve only got gestational diabetes and not type one. Do you get yours for free?

Hi @Hannah, yes I had this in my second GD pregnancy. I was having 7+ hypos a day and was admitted to hospital multiple times from 29 weeks of pregnancy. It was picked up after a couple of weeks of being on the Libre CGM. Even though falling insulin requirements can indicate a problem with the placenta, luckily for me it was just my body reacting a little strangely to it all. One thing that helped me it that I was put on a child’s novo rapid insulin pen as this had half units so I could help manage it with smaller doses. I ended up delivering my baby at 37 weeks as I was hospitalised with more multiple hypos and my baby was absolutely fine and only 6lb 1oz so it isn’t a given that baby will be big. This is only a brief bit about my experience so if you have and particular questions then please feel free to message me. I was diagnosed at only 6 weeks pregnant with my second baby! Take care x

@Bex thank you so much. Were they worried all the lows would be harmful to the baby or was it more they kept you in hospital to monitor you? I’m not sure on her size yet Altho at the 20 week scan looks like her head was about 10% percentile and her tummy was like 18th so quite small. My little boy was 87% and 99th🤦‍♀️😂❤️. So very different this time. My current monitor says I’ve spent 24% of the time in hypos and keeps going up so I’m guessing as those sizes were before this was happening maybe she’ll have gone down next week in percentile. Just hate the waiting part to see if she’s ok and if it’s placenta or just me ❤️ thank you for sharing your story with me ❤️❤️. Glad your little cutie was born with no further problems Etc 🥰🥰xxx

@Hannah sorry only just seen your reply! Hypos aren’t a problem for the baby they are only an issue for us, but having said that if you were to have a fall etc from the dizziness or the side effects of a hypo then obviously this wouldn’t be good for baby. Just having low blood glucose isn’t an issue baby though. Your baby girls head and abdominal percentages are pretty well the same as both of my girls were at 20 weeks! They did doppler scans (they scan the blood flow in the umbilical cord) on me every 2-3 weeks from 29 weeks onwards just to make sure the placenta was all working as it should. The waiting game is rubbish isn’t it! I hope all is well and your little girl is just perfect, no doubt she will be! X

@Gemma defo incorrect as I get the libre 2 plus on the NHS with GD x are you on insulin?

@Ana it doesn’t matter now as I’ve had the baby and no more gd. I asked several different midwives, I guess perhaps it’s a postcode lottery? I was on 60 insulin at night and some before meals.

@Gemma ah I didn’t realise the age of the post sorry! I’m glad your GD is over! Can’t wait to deliver on Friday and this is my last baby now so done forever with diabetes (hopefully) hope your delivery went ok and you and baby are doing ok x

Thanks @Ana, best of luck with the birth! We are doing fantastic thank you 🥰
