I’m a single mum with no support or help with my little one who’s 7 months old, I have no one that could babysit and I definitely can’t afford childcare, and he’s too young for me to get the free childcare hours still. I wasn’t expecting to end up in this situation and I’ve been scrambling to sort it since I found out I was. I am already on universal credit but that doesn’t cover my food, toiletries or fuel etc My statutory maternity pay ends in 2 weeks and I cannot financially survive unless I get a job, I’ve been applying non stop for the last month for remote part time jobs but I’ve heard nothing back from any of them, which is understandable as I don’t really have any experience in a working from home job. Honestly I’m just looking for some advice from anyone that has been in this type of situation or has knowledge in this area. I don’t know where to look, what help is available from the government etc.. so any insight would be appreciated great help Thank you x

If you’re on universal credit, can you not claim back 85% of your childcare costs?

I’m sorry your going through this 🙁 If you claim Universal Credit, you may be able to get an advance to pay the first month nursery fee - thereafter you would get some of the childcare fees back - up to 85%. Also make sure your claiming everything you can to help with your other costs. Do you get council tax support? Have you applied for the household support grant from your local council too? X

I've struggled the same as I don't have any support or anyone to watch my son and also no way to afford full time childcare along with all other expenses

Hi, what experience do you have?If admin-based, please consider data entry roles, many of which are remote and require some Excel skills. The rest you may request training for from the hiring company. Also consider admin roles at a University or local council near you. Many have childcare for their staff on site, at heavily reduced prices. I've had to switch jobs in the past to a University because of this exact dilemma.

Make sure you're claiming everything you can, UC with the housing element if you pay rent, council tax support 80% off if you're on low income, reduced costs for water bills and broadband and stuff, and up to 85% childcare reimbursement x
