Single parents who work full time

How do you manage school holidays? I want to work mon-fri but I'm terrified of having to ask for annual leave to cover those periods- so is preventing me from looking for full time work atm. How do you do it? My little one starts school for the first time next month and only have her dad for support at the weekends, he said he won't help me with school holidays so feel stuck. I'd love to progress career but don't see how I can do that on a part time basis

I work in a school. It's the only way that can accommodate holidays fairly without using so much annual leave. It depends what your career is at the moment but there is defo room for progression in it. Or work from home, but I struggled to find work in that way x

A lot of places offer a "buy more holidays" scheme so that could be an option. Or you could take unpaid leave occasionally if you don't have holidays left. I know not ideal but you can't put your life on hold until your baby is of an age where they can stay home alone whilst youre workingl. You've got to live and achieve your goals too! Just go for it and things tend to work themselves out 😁 could also look at care outside of school/during holidays like summer camps or whatever

And if it doesn't work out then you can always quit... but then at least you'll know you tried to figure it out and it wasn't for you at that moment

Generally full time work doesn't give you enough holidays to cover the years worth of school holidays anyway. You are entitled to ask for parental leave unpaid to help with that but they can decline. I don't have this problem yet and although I'm not a single parent, I don't want us to be off opposites as I want us to enjoy time as a family so I plan to utilise our annual leave together but also use holiday clubs when the time comes. Also you shouldn't be scared as the whole point of annual leave is to be able to utilise it when you want to 😊 It depends what your career is but I'm progressing mine part time until our little one goes to school so it's definitely possible with a supportive company

Not a single mom but my husband and I both work and need to cover holidays/sick days for baby. Do you have the option to work from home? It sucks and it's so hard but we just make that work when we have no choice (like right now because we all have COVID 😭). I usually tell work I'm going to work weird hours and work during baby's naps and when she goes to sleep, then in between if I get a little time when she's good doing her own thing.
