Diet

How did you approach your diet in the lead up to IVF? Generally, the advice is lots of protein (fish, chicken), leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds and moderate fruit intake. How strictly did you follow this diet? I feel guilty every time I eat an unhealthy snack and simultaneously angry at the thought of restricting myself so much.

Full transparency I was on no diet. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Good luck to you with whatever you decide that’s best for you. Don’t feel guilty, IVF is hard enough. 💪🏼

I’ve had to loose a huge amount of weight to be eligible for IVF and currently taking stims. I personally don’t think it’s helpful to completely remove all the ‘unhealthy' snacks or treats. I think moderation is better, a little bit of chocolate or whatever is good for your soul and therefore good for stress levels and lower stress levels are best! I find if I restrict it creates bingeing habits which are worse. Don’t feel guilty for nourishing your body!

The only think I say No, was alcohol, and coffee, and I don’t smoke so no need it, but the rest everything with moderation I ate desserts, sugar, carbs with super foods combined !!

The books “real food for pregnancy” and “it starts with the egg” go into detail and cite studies on the ideal diet for fertility and pregnancy

I’ve been low carb, Mediterranean style for a while now and I feel really good but then I was advised this would work best for my particular metabolism/health needs etc. I absolutely have loads of treats though, IVF is too hard to survive without treats! And I‘ve had as much coffee as I want because I genuinely don’t know how I’d make it into work without it!

I wasn’t on any strict diet either however I was very mindful with what I put in my body and made sure I was eating less sweets. That’s my weakness

I tried to eat relatively healthy but didn’t go overboard. Truthfully if diet had a significant impact more doctors would tell you to follow it. My RE just said it’s extremely unlikely to make to break a cycle.

@Bethany same!! I previously drank a lot of coffee so I cut it down to 200mg max. I didn't change anything else. You're right that ivf is hard enough!

Absolutely nothing. I had one cup of instant coffee in a morning, had takeaways, I drank alcohol (only 2 gins) the day before my period on the transfer that worked. I had a cold milkshake straight after the transfer. It’s all old wives tales and circumstantial evidence aka a few people ate that and it worked so now it’s “linked” in a study. So unless your clinic specifically recommend it, then as long as you’re eating a good balanced diet most of the time you’ll be fine. The embryo is either going to stick or it isn’t. Eating a pineapple core ain’t going to change that. As much as people would have you believe. IVF is hard, don’t stress yourself eat the cake and relax. Best of luck.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I see so many posts about diet and I am so desperate to support my body but it ends up being counterproductive as I stress about it all the time. As you've said, IVF is hard enough and I need to remember that a slice of cake or a pizza here or there is not really going to influence my chances!

@Jodi diet is pretty important but so is having cheat meals. Just be kind to yourself too

Eat what makes you happy because IVF is hard enough.
