Maternity leave

When is a good time to start your maternity leave? I have a c section booked for 31st October- should I start that week or before? What’s everyone’s advice?

How many weeks will you be by your c section? ☺️ It's tricky as you don't know how you will be in later pregnancy and every woman is so different! I do a non physical office job and have personally used to some annual leave to start my maternity two weeks earlier than I originally planned, so now I will be 37 weeks instead of 39 just in case I am struggling by the end. But I probably wouldn't have wanted to use my mat leave up before 39 weeks as my baby may well not come until 42 weeks then I'd feel like I'd have wasted precious time that could be spent with my baby. You have the luxury of knowing when you are having your baby which is great, so one week before may well be enough! It depends if your job is particularly physical too. Women with more physical jobs often go on mat leave earlier whereas in an office job, you can sometimes afford to work to closer your date even if it is uncomfortable sitting down all day.

I’m going off about one week before my c-section but also using a week of annual leave so technically starting maternity leave the week of c-section. Maybe start yours that week e.g 28th October. Have you got any annual leave you could use if you feel fed up closer to the time? I believe you can also change when you start mat leave as long as you give them the required amount of notice.

This is so helpful! I actually have lots of leave to use, so maybe that’s what I should do! Start mat leave from 28th, but book a week off before then just to give me some time? My c section is for when the baby is 39 weeks

@Chloe Amazing!! I definitely recommend that you use your leave girl 😍 The longer you can relax and nest without having to worry about work before your c section the better. A week of annual leave before your official mat leave starts sounds good to me, especially as you will be 39 weeks instead of over 40. It's definitely not too much to ask of your employer, a lot of women use their annual leave to extend :) I have extended at the end of my mat leave too by over a month using accrued annual leave just to make time off with baby last as long as possible! Good luck 🥰

Yeah all depends on how you feel, if you got annual leave etc. I’m taking 4 weeks off prior unless baby wants to make an early appearance x

blimey how r u all going up until 38/39 weeks!!!... I'm taking mine 7 weeks b4 I'm even due!!!

Just to give you some food for thought. I had my c section booked for 39 weeks and a couple of days and my waters broke 5 days before my planned section. I still had a c section but just so you keep in mind that may still be early.

I would highly recommend giving yourself at least a week before, with my first I worked up until I gave birth and I regret it so much. I never had time to just slow down and just take some time for me before he came, this time I am going off a week before my due date, I’ve saved up my annual leave to use this first then go on to maternity x

I'm working up until the week before as I'm currently working from home ❤️ I'm wondering when I'll have my c section date booked in?

I'm starting mat leave two weeks before but technically going three weeks before due date as I've got a week of annual leave to use

Currently, I'm planning to work until about 36wks. Everything is going smoothly in my pregnancy but it'll be the last time my husband and I will be "just us" forever. So, I want to take some time to enjoy that, prepare myself, do last minute shopping and just destress and forget about work before the big days comes. I've had friends who have gone into labour the day after they finished worked and I think they felt really ripped off! 🤣

I'm due in early November, so my last day is the 3oth of September, so I can fully rest beforehand and do any last-minute shopping

I am due on 10th but also planning a c section they said it is likely to be week 39 I will work until September 27th as j have some leave left and I want the last few weeks to myself !!

This is all so helpful thank you all so much ❤️⚡️

@Kirstie same . I didn’t use any of my annual leave kept all my 7 weeks x

With my first I went off at 37 weeks but then baby came at 38 weeks. Conversely, loads of people go to 41/42 weeks right so it's such a hard thing to work out. This time I work part time in an office role from home so plan to work up to I go into labour. My main drive is the timing! I don't want the 6 weeks full pay on stat to run out before christmas as my husband is self employed and will have a quiet period then

I'm.still waiting for c section date but think it'll be between 21st - 25th so have provisionally told my boss I'll be finishing on 15th (I have a weekend away booked anyway that friday) And I'll be working from home for November until I finish 🙃
