Advice

Hello, might be TMI but my partner and I had sex last night and today I went to get emergency contraception because we didn’t use protection and were being silly… the pharmacist in there had a chat with me and asked if I was EBF and I told him I was so he said that that in itself is natural contraception apparently so I won’t need any emergency contraception. But before I left hospital with baby 4 weeks ago, staff there said that it doesn’t matter if I’m breastfeeding or not started my periods as I can still get pregnant??? So I’m confused. The types of emergency contraception they had, one would require me to not BF for 8 hours and the other would require me to stop BF completely. So I told him that I can’t take either of those anyway because my LO doesn’t take the bottles we have and I don’t have any others at home at the moment as my partner is at work and I don’t have a car. My question I guess is why would he tell me I don’t need it because breastfeeding stops me getting pregnant and hospital staff tell me the complete opposite??? Can I or can’t I get pregnant while breastfeeding??

My GP said that until you start your period technically you can't get pregnant as you don't have a cycle to ovulate or anything but I don't really understand it either as surely to get your period you have to ovulate? Don't know if that's helpful at all haha sorry

You definitely can get pregnant. I think the chances are perhaps lower but either way you're definitely not protected like with contraception

That’s really really poor advice from a pharmacist! Breastfeeding is not a foolproof form of contraception, your hospital staff are right as you can still get pregnant when BF. I’ve had midwives, HVs and GP all tell me this pushing the guidance on multiple occasions since little one was born (my GP even poo-poo’d using condoms as he said even that was risky and called me brave 😂 but I drew the line at listening to that as don’t want hormonal intervention at the moment) I’m not sure of any guidance to help, sorry, but I would try another pharmacist perhaps to get other information/suggestions of what you may be able to do without impacting BF 🤞

You can get pregnant while breastfeeding only if your going to start your period other than that it is contraception as no ovulation means no pregnancy. The only issue is you don’t know when it’s going to start it’s chance. However Lactational amenorrhea method (LAM) is just as effective as the pill. The criteria are EBF, no returned period and baby is under 6 months. So if all those apply there’s 98% Chance you won’t get pregnant. X

I think if you’re EBF and had baby 4 weeks ago chances of getting pregnant right now are pretty slim. But I do know some people who got pregnant whilst breastfeeding but it was when baby was at least a few months-a year old so their periods would have been about to come back but didn’t because they got pregnant on the first cycle.

@Caitlin wow GPs don’t have a clue do they! You’re correct you ovulate before you get your period 🙈
