GBS positive and my OB prescribed oral antibiotics Amox. I've been seeing posts of people getting IV antibiotics right before delivering only. Has anyone been given oral antibiotics prior?

Worries about taking antibiotics while pregnant. Currently 28 weeks pregnant. Just want to hear everyone else experience. Thank you!

I wasn’t given oral antibiotics. Not sure why you would need them. Unless recommendations have changed, it’s my understanding that you get IV antibiotics during delivery. That’s what happened with me. As soon as your water breaks, you have to go to the hospital for antibiotics and to be induced even if you aren’t in active labor. I almost wasn’t 100% sure my water broke. My fluid was meconium stained and I was wondering if I wasn’t having some kind of discharge. Glad I went in to get checked.

I had 7 days of Amox and it reduced my levels of GBS significantly. You’ll also need iv antibiotics as soon as your waters break.

i had a 7 day course of oral antibiotics every time the GBS was present in my urine! i then also had the i’ve antibiotics in labour☺️ i was first told i had it at about 10 weeks just after my booking in appointment and i think i ended up having antibiotics another two times! No issues at all🙂

So it depends where the GBS was detected. If they find it in your urine then you get an oral course of antibiotics during pregnancy and oftentimes IV antibiotics just before giving birth. Those of us that had it detected via vaginal swab have to wait it out until delivery and get IV antibiotics 4 hours before your waters break because oral antibiotics don’t do anything for vaginal GBS. The threat to your baby isn’t there until your waters break which is the barrier to protect the baby from anything harmful (like GBS) so as soon as the waters break that’s when they are at risk hence getting the antibiotics before they break

It was detected in my urine at my booking appointment, so 8 weeks, I got prescribed antibiotics then for a week & then discussed the options for labour, I have decided on the IV antibiotics during labour x

The decision is yours. I test GBS positive and was not able to get any IV antibiotics (or oral) because my labor was so quick. My water did not break until my LO was coming out. Baby was good 😊 Do some research and choose what you feel most comfortable with!

I highly recommend Dr Sara Wickham’s book on GBS. With my daughter I just did what I was told and had antibiotics in labour. With my son I decided different and fought very hard to have oral antibiotics 2 weeks before due date and none in labour. Obviously a very personal choice.
