Jobs after a SAHM stint?

Hi! I have a colorful educational and career background, and decided to stay home with my kids full time in January of this year (my kids are newly 3, 3, and 16 months). The cost of daycare for 3 was nearly my salary, and we were all stretched thin and feeling rushed. When my twins go into elementary school I’m thinking about getting a master’s degree… I started my masters in childhood education while in undergrad so that seems like a no brainer, especially since I like the idea of being on my kids’ schedules for school breaks. But my teacher friends are soooo burnt out, and when I research salaries I’m reminded that our schools are disastrously underfunded and undersupported. It feels strange to have three kids and ask myself what I want to be when I grow up 😅 Moms that love your jobs… what do you do? Anyone else in the same boat? 👋

Have you considered school counseling? You’d still be on a school schedule with school breaks and when your children are older or if you decide you’d like to switch out of the school setting you can always switch to private practice counseling. This is what my sister did, she worked as a SPED teacher while she got her masters in counseling and then became a school counselor for about 12 years I believe, she just recently left and started her own private practice. I’m currently about to start my last semester for my masters in counseling as well and I can say that there are a lot of great and accredited online programs that might give you the flexibility to still care for your kiddos :) I’m at Marshall University and the whole program is offered online but I know there are a few other options available!

@Maria This was so detailed and helpful! I have a high school friend who is a school counselor. I hadn’t considered it but now I’m going to reach out! Thank you!

@Victoria This is a great tip! I’m in Texas, which typically offers less in terms of state assistance, but I’m going to look into it! 🥲
